Invisible Worlds and Verity Form Strategic Partnership

Relationship Offers Customers High-Performance Portal Infrastructure Technologies for Complete e-Business Meta-Data Management Using XML

SUNNYVALE, CA and PETALUMA, CA - 2000-07-23 - Invisible Worlds, Inc., the developer of Blocks™ and the Blocks eXtensible eXchange Protocol (BXXP), a universal solution for meta-data management, today announced that it has selected Verity's award-winning portal infrastructure technology to power Invisible Worlds' unique "infrastructure for business" solutions.

BXXP is under review by a working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to develop the protocol as the standard transport protocol for XML. The Blocks™ architecture provides an XML-based platform for managing meta-data and the framework for mining, retrieving and sorting enormous amounts of information with ease. Under the terms of the agreement, Verity and Invisible Worlds will conduct joint licensing and co-marketing activities, as well as joint development to build a Connector in Verity Portal One to BXXP. Verity Portal One is a comprehensive, integrated solution that includes the essential technology capabilities for a complete business portal. The high-performance and scalable Verity K2 Toolkit, Verity Developer's Kit (VDK), and Verity Profiler are all integrated into Invisible Worlds' BlocksTM technology.

"Verity has been our main XML indexing and knowledge retrieval solution for over a year," said Marco Gazzetta, Vice President of Technologies at Invisible Worlds. "Using their products, we have been handling databases of several million documents, achieving flexible searches and acceptable response times." Gazzetta added, "The Verity Profiler has been used, for instance, to implement persistent queries and to add depth to our meta-data. We are planning to deploy Verity's K2 high performance portal infrastructure to add scalability to our environment. This helps further our goal of creating a new class of infrastructure tools that combine broad interoperability with powerful information management tools in one platform. This brings the full power and extensibility of Blocks™ to real-world applications."

According to Anthony Bettencourt, President of Verity, "Invisible Worlds is developing some very advanced data mining tools. Using technology and software developed by company co-founder Marshall Rose, himself a founding father of the Internet, Invisible Worlds is developing a way to find information, index it, store it, and put it back together in useful ways. Verity and Invisible Worlds share a common customer base of companies interested in knowledge management, data mining, and pinpoint searching and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with this industry-leading partner."

Invisible Worlds President and CEO, Tim Davies, commented, "This partnership will bring enhanced value to all users of our combined products. It will enable them to utilize the Verity tools, supported with the interoperability and meta-data management capabilities of our Blocks™ technology." He added, "Our XML experience and meta-data expertise will help solidify both Verity's and our positions as leaders in erecting infrastructure for businesses which will continue to be a hugely important part of the development of diverse markets on the Internet. We welcome the opportunity to work together with Verity for the benefit of all our customers."

About Invisible Worlds Blocks™ and Mixer Technologies

Blocks™ is a powerful open standard for Internet queries as well as navigation of the Internet, corporate intranets, and other complex information spaces. Because Blocks™ is based on XML, query results can be published in virtually any form that the user desires. The Blocks™ protocol is implemented as three different software modules. The "Mixer" transforms unstructured raw data into structured meta-data, converts it to XML, and mixes it into "Blocks." The "SpaceServer™" stores meta-data and integrates it into the underlying data store. Finally, "Builders" retrieve Blocks of meta-data, which are highly adaptable for a wide range of applications.
