Virage Launches Video Application Server 2.0
New Version Adds Dynamic Web Video Publishing Support
STREAMING MEDIA EAST CONFERENCE, NEW YORK—June 12, 2000 —Virage, Inc., a leading provider of products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced the launch of the Virage Video Application Server™ 2.0, a ground-breaking platform that transforms the way streaming video is managed, published and experienced. The Video Application Server gives content owners a complete solution for creating and maintaining dynamic, video-rich web sites. It provides a robust foundation for advanced web applications using video such as advertising, commerce, rights management, personalization and syndication, thereby maximizing the value and financial return on video assets.
The Video Application Server gives content owners complete control over the video content and its presentation. Using a simple Web-based interface, content administrators can publish new video to the Web site, annotate clips, and incorporate related content. Web designers, using a powerful, but easy-to-use template system, have unlimited options for presenting video, seamlessly integrating it with other content on the site. Designers can provide on-demand, searchable access to video collections and tailor the look and feel of results pages to incorporate a site's unique branding. The video can also be automatically and dynamically published to web pages, or easily republished onto multiple sites.
By leveraging the Virage SmartEncode™ process, the Video Application Server enables a wealth of applications for streaming video. The SmartEncode process manages the simultaneous encoding of multiple formats and bit rates of the original content while indexing it with Virage's award-winning VideoLogger™. Video Application Server uses the resulting rich video index to provide both publishers and audiences with fine-grained control over their video content.
The open platform of the Video Application Server allows content owners to implement revenue-generating models such as pay-per-view, subscription, and syndication, that make streaming video an economically viable medium. In addition, the platform enhances the viewing experience by enabling familiar Internet paradigms such as user profiling and personalization. The Video Application Server's extensible template language and XML server interfaces empower Web site developers to apply these proven Internet applications to video content.
"By streamlining the process of integrating video into any web site, the Virage Video Application Server fills a role not served by basic encoders and video servers or even media asset management systems," said Mitchell Linden, Vice President of Strategy for Digital Media and Broadband Solutions at iXL. "For organizations wishing to publish and distribute significant amounts of video via the Internet or intranet, Virage's software platform provides an excellent turn-key solution. We look forward to using the Virage software to tackle our clients' challenging Internet video projects."
"Following an evolution similar to textual information on the Internet, video on the leading web sites is quickly migrating from manually-posted static files to dynamically published streaming media that takes full advantage of the medium," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "By providing an easy-to-use and scalable way to publish Internet video, the Virage Video Application Server gives enterprises, content owners and web developers unprecedented control over video content on the Web."
The Application Server is a packaged and fully supported version of the software that underlies leading Internet video sites hosted by Virage Interactive™ Application Services. It is designed for high performance and can scale to enterprise- and Internet-wide deployments.
