PBS and Virage Bring Video from The Newshour With Jim Lehrer to the Web

Virage Video Application Platform Allows PBS.org to Dynamically Publish Award-Winning News Program to the Internet

STREAMING MEDIA EAST CONFERENCE, NEW YORK—June 12, 2000 —Virage, Inc., a leading provider of products and application services that enable video for the Internet, and PBS have announced the launch of continuously updated, searchable, on-demand video content from The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS.org. PBS is using Virage Interactive™ application services to dynamically publish the award-winning news program to the Internet the morning following its broadcast on local PBS stations. Virage also gives PBS the ability to easily distribute contextualized excerpts of NewsHour video content to more than 300 PBS stations for use on their local web sites.

"Virage provides us with the tools and expertise to automatically transform one of the most prestigious news programs on television into on-demand Internet video content," said Cindy Johanson, senior vice president of Broadband and Internet Services, PBS. "With the Virage platform, local PBS stations will be able to offer contextual segments of this award-winning content - via their web sites - to viewers across America."

"We are excited to be working with PBS on this ground-breaking initiative," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "PBS and local PBS stations continue to demonstrate technology leadership in the delivery of informative and educational programming. We are proud to provide the infrastructure behind their vision."

Virage provides PBS with a complete, outsourced solution for publishing its television programming to the Internet in a form that is easily navigated by web users. PBS.org relies on Virage, and its SmartEncode™ process, to encode, index and publish each NewsHour segment on PBS.org. Using the same video index, Virage also provides local PBS stations with a way to easily select relevant video clips for publishing on their own web sites in context with the stations' own local news and public affairs content. By using the Virage Video Application Platform, PBS lays the foundation for the personalized viewing experience, which is characterized by on-demand, interactive and user-driven content at fast speeds for broadband users and a slower speed for narrowband users.

Virage also announced that PBS has chosen Virage to be one of a select group of members of its PBS Online Technology Alliance Program. Please see http://www.pbs.org/aboutsite/tap.html for details.
