Virage Announces Broad Adoption of Its Video Application Platform
Virage Platform Enables Encoding, Publishing and Syndication of "Intelligent" Video Streams on the Internet
STREAMING MEDIA EAST CONFERENCE, NEW YORK—June 12, 2000 —Virage, Inc. a leading provider of interactive products and application services that enable video for the Internet, today announced cross-industry endorsement for its Video Application Platform. The Virage platform provides all necessary infrastructure for large-scale deployment of streaming video and is currently used by more than 150 customers across media & entertainment and enterprise markets. Virage's Internet video solutions are cross-platform, integration-ready, and production-proven. Based on a scalable and open architecture, the Video Application Platform is comprised of the Virage SmartEncode™ process, the Virage Video Application Server™ and the Virage Internet Video Guide™. The Virage platform is available to customers either as licensed software or as an outsourced application services solution.
"The Virage Video Application Platform provides a powerful, easy-to-use and extensible system for publishing, managing and distributing video on the Internet," said Jim Ricotta of Cisco Systems. "Our integration of Virage products with Cisco content networking technology provides our customers with the tools they need to take full advantage of video on the Internet."
The Virage SmartEncode™
Process
The Virage SmartEncode process is the starting point for the Virage application platform. The process transforms standard analog or digital video into Internet-compliant content optimized for use and reuse on the Web. The SmartEncode process manages the simultaneous encoding of multiple formats and bit rates of the original video asset while automatically indexing the video content by visual scene change, spoken words, and recognized faces and speakers. In addition to automated encoding and indexing, the process also supports the addition of editorial annotations to specific moments in the video. The SmartEncode process is the key to transforming video into easily accessible and usable information on the Internet.
The Virage SmartEncode process is available either through the latest release of the award-winning Virage VideoLogger™ (version 4.0) or as an outsourced service through Virage Interactive application services.
Virage Video Application Server
Virage also announced the availability of Virage Video Application Server 2.0. This server platform provides a flexible and customizable publishing foundation for video-rich web sites. When coupled with the Virage SmartEncode process, the application server provides the application infrastructure necessary for large-scale Internet video publishing and syndication.
Virage Interactive™

Virage Interactive application services offer an array of production and application hosting services for customers who prefer to outsource some or all of their Internet video infrastructure requirements.
