RealNetworks Adds Virage Internet Video Guideā„¢ Access to RealPlayer, RealJukebox and Real.com

RealNetworks is First to Deploy Virage's New Internet-Wide Video Search Engine

REAL CONFERENCE 2000, SAN JOSE, California—May 22, 2000—Virage Inc., a leading provider of products and application services that enable video for the Internet, announced today that RealNetworksĀ®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), a recognized leader in Internet media delivery, is now using the Virage Internet Video Guideā„¢ to offer consumers enhanced video search from RealPlayerĀ® 8, Real.comā„¢ Guide and RealJukeboxā„¢ 2. Virage's video search engine provides RealNetworks' more than 125 million unique registered users of RealPlayer, more than 34 million unique registered users of RealJukebox, and more than 13.5 million monthly users of Real.com Network (according to Media Metrix, March 2000) access to its high-quality index of video files, searchable by what's in the video.

The enhanced video search capabilities are part of the new Real Entertainment Center http://www.real.com launched this week at the RealNetworks Conference in San Jose, CA. The Virage Internet Video Guide gives users the ability to search for video content using a familiar search engine interface, making finding video on the Web as easy as locating text. Query results present both text descriptions of video content and thumbnail images, allowing users to quickly evaluate the results of their search without having to play each video.

Using its award-winning automatic indexing software, Virage produces a high-quality database of video files on the Internet. This index, and the associated high-speed search engine, provides Real.com users the ability to quickly locate videos based on what is actually in the video, not simply filenames or text surrounding video on a web page. Furthermore, once located, video clips can be played directly from the point of interest as opposed to simply starting from the beginning of the video. Virage Internet Video Guide gives online video producers a powerful new way to drive traffic to their sites while reinforcing their existing business models, at the same time providing Internet users unparalleled access to rich media on the Web.

"As the amount of RealMediaā„¢ audio and video programming on the Internet explodes, Internet users increasingly rely on Real.com Guide and RealPlayer to quickly locate content they want," said Tom Frank, COO, RealNetworks. "The integration of the Virage Internet Video Guide into Real.com Guide, RealPlayer and RealJukebox enables us to provide a relevant and consistent search experience to the millions of consumers who use our products and services. This is a significant advancement in the way content producers reach viewers."

"We are proud to be working with RealNetworks to provide a video search engine that truly respects content owners on the Internet," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "Blending an extremely rich index with sophisticated linking and browse tools, the Virage Internet Video Guide allows RealNetworks to give Internet users accurate results and quick access to quality video content, while preserving the integrity of the end-user experience intended by content producers."

RealNetworks Selects Virage to Publish Real Conference 2000 to Real.com

Virage also announced today that RealNetworks is using Virage's application services to publish the video of keynote speeches and conference sessions at this week's RealNetworks Conference onto Real.com. Using the latest RealPlayer technology, Virage will transform the sessions of RealNetworks Conference into a multi-purpose library of interactive video and presentation content available on Real.com following the event. Using Virage Interactive services to integrate the on-demand, searchable conference material throughout their site, RealNetworks is able to expand their attendee base by providing a virtual conference experience. Virage's technology also provides RealNetworks with the ability to easily reuse their valuable conference material for continued information sharing with its growing developer community, and to provide Real.com visitors with immediate access to information.
