Virage and The WB Televison Network Bring "Popular" Television Series to the Web

Virage-Enabled Streaming Video Powers The WB's

Online Popularity Contest

SAN MATEO, California —May 15, 2000 —Virage, Inc., a leading provider of interactive products and application services that enable video for the Internet, announced that The WB Television Network is using Virage's application services, Virage Interactive™, to enable a new level of interactivity between The WB television programming and its online audience. With the help of Virage, The WB is bringing true audience participation to their one-hour comedy series, Popular. Blending contemporary laughs and relatable drama, "Popular" explores the universal quest for popularity and acceptance within the teen caste system at Kennedy High School. The show's wry satire of pop culture and life in high school has become the talk in hallways and on the Internet every Friday morning. The WB's Popular Purge event uses Virage's Internet video infrastructure to enable viewers to review their favorite scenes by character, date and episode, and then express their opinion as to which character should be eliminated in the season finale.

As part of the agreement, Virage is transforming the first 18 episodes from the inaugural season of "Popular" into web-compliant streaming video. This content is then integrated into an online promotion that allows fans to search previously televised programs by topic, character, date, and episode. In addition to reviewing scenes from past episodes and individual characters, web site visitors can state their opinions as to whom should get "purged" in the season finale on May 18. The most humorous comments will be integrated into the broadcast of the show.

"The Internet allows media and entertainment companies to offer a dramatically new experience to their audiences and fans," said Paul Lego, chairman and CEO of Virage. "Allowing viewers to easily interact with and contribute to broadcast content is just one of the many ways the Web can complement television. With the Popular Purge event, The WB combines the power and reach of television with the interactivity of the Internet, and we are excited to play a part in this convergence."

"Virage and the Internet are enabling a new entertainment experience for our fans," said Franz Kurath, vice president, New Media, The WB Television Network. "Virage's technology allows us to reach our audience in new and exciting ways, stimulating viewer involvement and interaction, and helping us build strong communities around our content."
