Skanska chooses Autonomy to Automate Business-Critical Information
Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box enables Skanska to reduce the cost of managing information and to focus on core business
CAMBRIDGE, England, 5 May 2000 - Autonomy today announced that worldwide construction and development company Skanska has adopted Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box™ product to create an enterprise information portal that will categorise, personalise and deliver business-critical industry information to employees, from both internal Skanska sources, and from the Web, completely automatically.
Like all large organizations, Skanska, which currently has 45,000 employees in 60 different countries, relies on large quantities of unstructured information from both internal and external sources. Managing this information manually is time-consuming and expensive. Using Autonomy, Skanska will automate the entire process, ensuring that the right information always reaches the right people, in its most current form, without the need for an Intranet editorial team.
For Skanska, which is a development-intensive company, the new portal will be an important tool in the company's efforts to harness and maximise its knowledge base, both explicit and tacit. Anna Parkman, Information Systems Manager at Skanska Group Information Technology, said:
"Autonomy's technology means that we are able to automatically collect and categorise all business-critical information, index it conceptually in real time, and personalise it to the demands of each user. It will save the Group a lot of time and money - time and money that can be spent on more important issues, like our core business."
At the heart of Autonomy's software is a pattern recognition technology, which has the ability to analyse a piece of text and identify the main ideas. This enables the software to then determine how the text should be categorised, who should see it, what other relevant material it should be linked to, and how it should be tagged - which all happens automatically. Autonomy's technology is currently being used or licensed by a number of other high-profile electronic publishers, e-commerce providers, corporates and partners worldwide, including Compaq, News Corporation, the BBC, Reuters, Associated Press, Vignette, BAE Systems (formerly British Aerospace) and breathe.net.
