Cardiff Helps Define New XForms W3C Standard
Unique Cardiff eForm Solutions allow organizations to "Design-Once" and automate the collection and processing of all paper and online forms
San Diego - 2000-04-19 - Today Cardiff Software joined the W3C standards organization in announcing the publication of the XForms Data Working Model draft, outlining the development of a new standard for automating the processing of forms on the Web. Cardiff is a member of the W3C and is an active participant in the XForms sub-group within W3C. Cardiff was also a co-Editor of the newly published XForms specification. Details on Cardiff's eForm and XML integration efforts can be found at www.Cardiff.com/XForms.
By design, XForms is not dependent upon a specific way of presenting a form, yet defines clearly the model for data collected from forms. Cardiff's existing XML capabilities within its market-leading eForm and Information Capture solutions allows organizations to connect paper, HTML and Adobe PDF forms to XML applications on the Internet. XForms promises to connect Cardiff solutions to even more applications by standardizing the XML data model.
"The XForms proposal is a mirror of Cardiff's current product architecture and existing XML implementation," said Mark Seamans, Chief Technology Officer at Cardiff. "As a result of this design, our customers can automate the processing of paper, HTML and Adobe PDF forms, and connect the resulting data to any XML-based application. A presentation neutral approach insulates our customers from the technical details, and allows them to leverage their existing product investments more deeply into the Web."
Automated Form Processing for Paper and Online Forms
Cardiff's products automate the collection and processing of both paper and online forms. Using Cardiff's TELEform and eForm Warehouse Suite organizations can save up to $150 in the processing of a single form when compared to manual processes. With Cardiff, paper forms are automatically converted into digital information, and all forms are processed through data scrubbing and business rules engines. Cardiff's products also speed connections to database and XML applications, and offer the option to store copies of processed forms into Web-based content management systems. Over 20,000 organizations use Cardiff's automated forms processing solutions to speed access to data and to clean data as it enters the organization.
Design Once - Point & Click Form Designer
Cardiff's Form Designer lets organizations create their forms once, protecting their investment in forms design and data validation intelligence. Forms can be published as paper, HTML or Adobe PDF from within the Form Designer, complete with client- and server-side data validation and processing. Form intelligence for client-side validation is added to HTML and Adobe PDF forms automatically as JavaScript, with more data validation available on the server. For example, Cardiff's TrueAddress Module is used on the server to verify street address information. By adding robust processing rules to online forms, Cardiff's products prevent bad data from entering database and Back Office applications.
The Impact of XForms
The new XForms proposal is not a replacement for existing eForms, nor does it replace investments in existing XML data interchange. Instead it is another tool that organizations can use to automate the way they collect, manage and use online information. The XForms Data Model will work within HTML and Adobe PDF eForms through vendors like Cardiff.
"Previous proposals for an XML standard were derived from proprietary eForms products," said Robert J. Weideman, VP Marketing for Cardiff. "We feel that the current XForms proposal is the better path, giving existing investments in HTML, Adobe PDF and even handheld forms access to a common data model."
Avoiding Browser Wars for eForms
Cardiff is the leading supplier of eForm solutions based upon industry standards, including HTML, Adobe PDF and XML. While XForms will eventually define a GUI representation for eForms, the XForms Data Model will protect organizations from differences in its eventual implementation within browsers.
Cardiff products are browser, platform and workflow independent. Unlike proprietary solutions that require plug-ins or proprietary Java applets, Cardiff's products can be used with any HTML browser, and can be hosted on standard Web servers and within popular content management systems. For example, Cardiff's eForm Warehouse Suite adds powerful eForms capabilities to FileNET Panagon, MosaicSoft DocSmart, Lotus Notes/Domino, and Open Text Livelink. This component approach been recognized through industry awards, and has led to over 1,000 site installations of Cardiff eForm solutions in 1999 alone.
