Telecinco Employs Virage-Enabled Video from Satellite Downlink to Internet Upload
Spain's Largest Broadcaster Combines Virage Video Search Products and Application Services to Move Broadcast to Broadband
NAB 2000 CONVENTION, Las Vegas, NV—April 11, 2000 —Virage, Inc., a leading provider of interactive video search products and application services, announced today that Telecinco, Spain's largest television broadcaster, has recently used Virage's application services to make nightly news broadcasts available on its web site. Telecinco, an existing Virage customer, has been using Virage's video search products as the front end to its advanced digital news automation and news archive system. Now, by using Virage's application services to extend its broadcast assets online, Telecinco is able to move broadcast to broadband and becomes one of the first global broadcasters to integrate digital broadcast from satellite ingest to Internet output.
"For more than four years, we have been pursuing our vision of delivering all resources, including video and audio feeds, directly to personal computers, which enables our entire workforce to access, share and integrate information with greater efficiency," said José Luis Romero, technical director for Telecinco. "Working with Virage and other leading technology partners such as Sun, Informix and StorageTek over the last year has allowed us to turn the corner on achieving our goal of digitally integrating our broadcast business. By helping to free people from non-creative tasks, Virage products and services enable our people to unleash their fantastic creativity and share information easily throughout the company, thereby adding real value to their work and to Telecinco."
A year ago (1999), Telecinco turned to Virage to provide the critical video and audio search component of its all-digital news production and archive system. Since then, Telecinco has aggressively pursued implementation of this system, putting it at the forefront of digital broadcast technology. The complex system allows Telecinco to quickly collect, share and distribute incoming live news feeds as well as to provide online search and browse of tens of thousands of hours of archived video.
Telecinco sees the move to the Internet as the next logical progression in the completion of its digital broadcast strategy, allowing it to expand brand identity and grow audience share. By using the Virage index to publish its video assets online, Telecinco plans to pursue a variety of revenue creating opportunities as well as provide searchable, on demand viewing opportunities to its audience.
"As broadband becomes more widely accepted, broadcasters are faced with the reality that their web sites will be as important as their call letters," said Carlos Montalvo, VP of marketing at Virage. "Telecinco's leadership position in digital broadcasting is paving the way for the industry's adoption of a comprehensive broadcast to broadband strategy. We are proud to be working with them on this pioneering project."
