Virage's New Videologger 4.0 Sets New Standards for Automatic, Real-Time Video Indexing

Award-Winning Software Now Provides Real-Time Face and On-Screen Text Recognition

NAB 2000 CONVENTION, Las Vegas, NV—April 11, 2000 —Virage Inc., a leading provider of interactive video search products and application services, today launched and demonstrated VideoLogger 4.0, the latest version of its award-winning video indexing platform. Enhancing its ability to extract information from video assets in real-time, VideoLogger now provides support for face and on-screen text recognition. VideoLogger 4.0 also introduces full support for MPEG2 encoding and ingest, as well as a new memory architecture for improved reliability in mission critical logging scenarios. Improving upon the powerful cataloging capabilities of its predecessor, VideoLogger 4.0 is designed to further address the needs of high-demand broadcast and video production environments.

"Virage continues to make technological advances with each new VideoLogger release," says Susie Opare, director of product marketing at Virage. "We are committed to evolving our product lines to meet the requirements of our video rich enterprise customers, and to pushing the technological boundaries of video indexing by integrating best of breed analysis technologies."

Virage Media Analysis Software for Face and On-Screen Text Recognition

Virage's new media analysis framework makes it possible to easily integrate state-of-the-art technologies. The first in a growing suite of media analysis tools, the newly available face and on-screen text recognition provide real-time, automatic extraction of information from the video content to enrich VideoLogger's index.

Virage's face recognition module allows users to program a library of known faces by adding images to the face library. Using FaceIt™ Technology from Visionics corporation, VideoLogger analyses each face in the video content to identify known faces and adds the name of the person to the video index. For example, users can instantly do searches on known personalities such as foreign dignitaries, political leaders, news anchors and celebrities.

Using ConTEXTrack® text extraction and recognition technology from SRI, Virage's On-Screen Text Recognition "reads" text in the video signal, such as supers, lower thirds, etc, and adds that information to the video index. By providing automatic, real-time extraction of this information, VideoLogger gives users immediate access to clips where a particular name or location appears, for example.

"We are constantly evaluating new technology as it becomes available," continues Opare. "We believe that Visionics and SRI are experts in their fields. Using third-party technology partners allows Virage to focus on our core competencies and at the same time deliver technological advancements that are the result of years of research and development."

VideoLogger 4.0 Enhancements

Having evolved from an application to an extensible platform, the robust architecture of the new VideoLogger offers more features and enhancements to meet the stingent deadlines of mission critical applications. These include:

Support for both ingest and encode of high-resolution MPEG2 for creating program content.
