Chapters Online Selects Verity For Unique, First-of-a-Kind E-Commerce Solution

Verity K2 Toolkit Delivers Precise Results to Both Brick-and-Mortar and Online Buyers

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2000-04-11 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise and Internet knowledge retrieval solutions, today announced that Chapters Online Inc. (TSE: COL), the Canadian e-commerce company that operates leading Canadian destination sites for online shoppers, has selected Verity's K2 Toolkit to provide high performance knowledge retrieval solutions to its customers. Chapters Online chose Verity's proven technology to provide precise and accurate e-commerce search and retrieval with the goal of helping customers find the products they want to purchase, quickly and easily.

With over 2.5 million book titles, over 240,000 music titles, more than 70,000 videotapes and DVDs as well as software, video games and electronics, Chapters Online knew they needed to have a knowledge retrieval system that would scale quickly and easily as well as help customers immediately locate items they are interested in—because if your customers can't find it, they won't buy it.

Additionally, Chapters Online is unique among e-commerce companies in North America, having taken an integrated "clicks and mortar" approach to retailing with its parent company Chapters, Inc. Each of Chapters' 70 brick-and-mortar stores, located throughout Canada, provides e-commerce kiosks connected to the Chapters Online book database, where customers can search not only the titles located in the individual store, but the entire online book inventory available at www.chapters.ca. This online integration of physical store and virtual store inventory enables in-store customers to access a much more extensive ranges of titles. Customers can also purchase books from Chapters Online through the e-commerce kiosks and have their orders shipped to them free of charge.

"Chapters and Chapters Online have developed one of the most sophisticated book retailing operations in the world by pioneering a whole new model for doing business, both in person and on the net," said Anthony Bettencourt, president of Verity. "This is one of the first instances of successfully integrating a brick-and-mortar store with a high-volume e-commerce site, providing shoppers with convenience, selection, and prices that can't be duplicated. We're extremely proud that the Verity K2 toolkit has been chosen to power this strategic online destination."

According to Rick Segal, president and chief operating officer of Chapters Online, "Verity's solution gave us an important tool to meet the overwhelming demand we faced just as soon as we opened our online site to buyers: delivering incredible accuracy in returning the titles our buyers requested. In addition," Segal continued, "Verity's solution has provided the speed, scalability and precision we were looking for. Verity is able to update collections and prices in minutes, rather than the hours it took with our previous implementation. We have experienced an almost 3,000% increase in unique customers in one year, and Verity's technology has continued to keep pace."
