IBM Veteran to Bring Visionary Portal and B2B Engineering Experience to Verity

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2000-03-17 - Verity, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise and Internet knowledge retrieval solutions, today announced the appointment of Dr. Ashok K. Chandra to the newly created position of senior vice president of development and new business activities.

As director of database systems and computer science at IBM's Almaden Research Center (San Jose, CA), Dr. Chandra brings 27 years of extensive experience in developing and bringing to market innovations in database systems, content management, portals, and storage systems software. Reporting to Anthony J. Bettencourt, president, Dr. Chandra has the responsibility for the strategic design and development of the company's full suite of products and solutions.

Verity's advanced technology powers corporate portals, e-commerce sites, online publishing and media sites, customer care applications, and products from market-leading OEMs and ISVs. Verity solutions simplify the management and use of information by indexing, classifying, organizing, searching and retrieving data, as well as providing personalized information delivery and hybrid online and CD publishing.

"Ashok has exceptional technology vision and expertise directly relevant to Verity's core product sectors, as well as an excellent product delivery track record. His strong combination of R&D management, research and advisory experience, plus his relationship building and execution skills provide the ideal mix of experience needed to enhance and develop our products for our next generation of e-commerce and enterprise solutions," said Anthony J. Bettencourt. "We believe Ashok will be a terrific fit with our core strengths, our management team and our company," said Gary J. Sbona, CEO. "We feel very fortunate to have someone with his proven performance to lead our development and strategic activities."

Prior to Verity Dr. Chandra managed a group of approximately 200 R&D professionals at IBM's Almaden Research Center covering a range of areas including database systems, knowledge management, electronic marketplaces, user interfaces, services, and storage systems. That organization architected and co-developed major IBM products, including ADSM, IBM Intelligent Miner, and the General Purpose File System for IBM's high-end AIX machines. Dr. Chandra also served on IBM's Data Management Brand Board, and was a review executive for various IBM products.

Dr. Chandra had responsibility for creating the IBM Intellectual Property Network, which uses Verity's technology. With over 4TB of data, it is one of the largest portals on the Internet. Chandra also helped develop some of the largest Java and XML resource sites on the internet, and, using them, helped established IBM's software development site - developerWorks. Dr. Chandra's team created Clever, a web mining technology with various ongoing uses in portals and future product possibilities. Over the last two years, he has emerged as a visionary in both portals and B2B marketplaces.

Dr. Chandra received his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1969, his M.S. in EECS from U.C. Berkeley in 1970, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1973. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, has received numerous Outstanding Awards from IBM, and is a member of IBM's Academy of Technology. He holds two patents and has published over 50 papers in professional conferences and journals. He regularly speaks at industry conferences.

"I'm very excited to be joining a company that's so responsive to customer requirements and committed to delivering award-winning products to the market," said Chandra. "The knowledge management, e-commerce and portal marketplaces are rapidly growing, and I'm proud to be part of an organization that is such a clear leader in this space."
