SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 2000-02-24 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise and Internet knowledge retrieval solutions, today announced that Virgin Net, (www.virgin.net), the UK's No.1 entertainment and leisure service online, has improved and finely tuned its search facility by implementing an advanced information retrieval solution. Virgin Net has selected Verity's Information Server to give its 660,000 subscribers fast and precise access to the site's content. The new search facility will initially be implemented on the travel guides and music album reviews sections. Specially created keywords have also been attached to all other relevant pages on the site.
Verity was chosen because of its strong reputation in the text retrieval market, as it offers a robust technology that can easily handle a large volume of site traffic. As Virgin Net expects the number of site page impressions to continue to rise, it needed a truly reliable solution that would offer its subscribers an easy to use service that delivered results fast. The fact that Verity is a highly flexible technology was also crucial to the selection process. Verity could be easily integrated with Virgin Net's existing Internet technology, meaning that users could search across the Virgin Net site and the Internet simultaneously.
"A fast and reliable search solution is one of the key elements to a successful website. If people can't find what they want, they soon move on and Verity's technology will make sure our content receives maximum exposure. We looked at a range of search solutions for our content. Our team of search specialists had used Verity before and through our experience and success of pilot projects believed it provided the best search solution," said Julie Rowbotham, managing editor, Virgin Net. "Verity gave us the opportunity to index our content in such a detailed way, even down to specific album reviews. We feel that this flexibility gave us the opportunity to add tremendous searching value for the user. We are now working towards indexing all the content on Virgin Net using Verity."
The new search facility allows relevant results found on the Virgin Net site to be presented to the user first. For example, if a user searches for a pop group, the user will see all the group's albums reviewed by Virgin Net in the results set first. The remainder of the results set will list all other sites on the Internet relating to that band, e.g. the official site etc. Verity technology has helped provide a unique way of maximizing Virgin Net content to the user as well as providing a shortcut to content buried deep within the service.
