Autonomy Launches WAP Technology

i-WAP - evolution of the core Autonomy software delivers real value for WAP technology

23 February 2000 CAMBRIDGE, England - Autonomy Corporation plc (EASDAQ: AUTN) - Autonomy today announces the evolution of its core technology to the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) platform. Autonomy's new i-WAP technology individually tailors and filters content on the internet ensuring that the benefits of mobile access are not impaired by the inability of mobile devices to process the ever increasing quantities of content on the internet. This is achieved through the automatic personalisation, categorisation and hyperlinking of information that is delivered to mobile phones and other personal digital devices by Autonomy's sophisticated intelligent software. Users of Autonomy's i-WAP technology already include Ericsson, Talkcast, Breathe and YaTack.

Autonomy has WAP-enabled its entire range of products across its core markets of new media, enterprise software and e-commerce. Autonomy's i-WAP technology will enable content and service providers, enterprises and commerce vendors to automatically satisfy the needs of WAP users. Profiling users based on their personal preference and their interaction with information from thousands of sources, including the Web and corporate portals and even their interaction with other users with similar interests.

Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch commented today: "Autonomy's technology provides a fundamental component in the wireless world. Without it, WAP just won't work efficiently. Mobile devices just don't have the capability to process large amounts of Internet content. Tiny screens and the low speeds of handheld devices mean that the ability to intelligently filter information is a key enabling technology for WAP devices."

"The information you shouldn't receive is just as important as the information you do receive. Autonomy's WAP technology automatically delivers the information users need, when they need it, wherever they are, without constantly bombarding mobile devices with irrelevant content."

"Autonomy's technology is the first to derive real value from the convergence of the web and wireless telecommunications technology."

Benefits to the user of WAP technology

As users interact with their WAP devices, Autonomy's i-WAP technology automatically analyses and filters the ideas in text and data and provides real-time links to related information. The links may include business intelligence and news alerts, sports results, email, SMS messages and voicemail or even contact information for colleagues working in a similar area.

The result is that users do not waste valuable time browsing the web or sifting through large amounts of irrelevant information on their mobile or handheld devices. Instead, i-WAP technology enables the delivery of the most relevant information in real-time, either in full text or as an automatically generated summary, enabling users to work more efficiently on the move.

Because Autonomy's technology can analyse any piece of text (independent of its language) and identify and rank the main ideas, Autonomy can automate a broad range of otherwise labour intensive tasks associated with the management and delivery of content in real-time to any wireless or handheld device. These range from categorising information by subject matter, inserting hypertext links to related material, profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.

Autonomy's new WAP division

The company has also established a new WAP division with bases in Cambridge and Scandinavia; headed in the UK by Technology Solutions Director, Neil Macehiter, formerly of Brokat, Oracle, and in Scandinavia by Technical Director Finn-Arvid Johansen.

Commenting on the creation of Autonomy's new WAP division, Mike Lynch, added: "It has been clear for sometime, and demonstrated by the recent corporate activity in Europe, that WAP-based technologies will provide significant commercial opportunities in the future. The creation of our WAP division will allow Autonomy to specifically focus our R&D and sales effort on this important new market."

Current customers of Autonomy's i-WAP product

Among the international customers currently using Autonomy's i-WAPtechnology across different markets are:

  • Enterprise software: Ericsson uses Autonomy technology to deliver personalised business information from the Web and internal sources to their employees' mobile phones via an enterprise-wide i-WAP powered portal.
  • New media: Talkcast utilises Autonomy technology to deliver its personalised content and services to any digital platform - from the Internet to mobile phones - revolutionising the way we access and share information.
  • New media: Breathe uses Autonomy technology to create information "hubs" to deliver personalised information to people on the move, through specialised WAP-enabled vertical portals
  • Ecommerce: YaTack, Scandinavia's most-visited e-commerce site, uses Autonomy technology to personalise product promotions and offerings and deliver them to consumers via mobile phones and WAP devices.
