Virage Transforms Live Broadband Coverage of Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primary Into On-Demand Content

21e Selects Virage to Add Video Search Capabilities to Politically Wired 2000

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana —January 26, 2000—NATPE—Virage Inc., a leading provider of interactive video search products and application services, announced today that 21e, the web entertainment broadcasting network, is using Virage's application services to add on-demand searchability to the Politically Wired 2000 broadband broadcast, now in progress. Virage Interactive™ services is converting 21e's coverage of the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary into searchable, on-demand video available for viewing on their web site [http://www.21e.net] at any time and from any location. Politically Wired 2000, which lasts from January 23 to February 1, is expected to be one of the Internet's largest broadband broadcast events to date.

"With this event, Virage is helping us shape the future of how the world experiences television and important news coverage," said Rick Davis, CEO of 21e. "By enabling us to rapidly transform a live broadcast into an on-demand, searchable event, Virage helps us give our viewers what they want: control over content. Virage helps us take advantage of the capabilities of the Internet as a new communications medium and allows us to dramatically improve the viewing experience over traditional broadcasting."

Historically, live events broadcast on the Web have been one-time-only events, their content lost once aired. Now, by using Virage Interactive™ services to index and publish the video to their site, 21e retains valuable video coverage as searchable, interactive content on their site. Augmenting the live broadcasts, the searchable video archive allows 21e viewers to drive the viewing experience of the ten-day event. Using Virage's video search engine, viewers have any-time access to the political coverage and can watch the specific parts of the event in which they are most interested, using keywords to pull up clips by topic, candidate or date of interest.

"With Politically Wired 2000, 21e has not only created a breakthrough broadband experience, they have also provided a very valuable resource to voters nationwide," said Carlos Montalvo, vice president of marketing at Virage. "We are excited to add our real-time indexing and video search capabilities to the coverage of this event."
