Company Announcement: Autonomy to Create Faster, Automatic e-Business Solutions Using Intel® Itanium™ Processor Platform
CAMBRIDGE, England (January 13, 2000) - Autonomy, today announced that it is working with Intel to provide fully automated e-Business software solutions compatible with the new 64-bit Itanium™ processor. Autonomy's products for knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and e-commerce and Intel's 64-bit Itanium™ processor have been designed to address the demanding needs of large-scale e-Business implementations.
According to Intel research, only five percent of the existing Internet infrastructure is in place today to address the predicted needs of the e-Business environment by the year 2005. The Internet economy is changing how enterprises create strategies and pursue marketplaces, driving businesses to find ways to transact, transfer, store, manage and communicate digital information in automatic, faster and more cost-effective ways.
Autonomy's technology identifies the main ideas in any piece of text to uniquely address the needs of organizations by automatically managing the ever-growing volumes of unstructured information. Autonomy's technology already provides the infrastructure for some of the world's largest information systems. The Itanium™ processor is Intel's first product in the IA-64 family of processors. It incorporates many leading-edge features specifically designed to address the ever expanding needs of the e-Business environment such as massive computing resources and the ability to execute many instructions simultaneously, large memory capabilities provide a vast amount of room to store and advanced high-availability features. Itanium processor-based servers and workstations will be available in the second half of the year 2000.
Richard Gaunt, technical director of Autonomy commented: "The new generation of Intel processors provides a great basis for scalable and high-performance e-Business applications. The joint development work with Intel will allow Autonomy's e-Business solutions to deliver unsurpassed scalability, speed and responsiveness for Internet and enterprise audiences."
Tim Keating, director of content group, Intel EMEA, commented: " Businesses increasingly need knowledge management solutions that will scale with their growing operations whilst automating the processing of large amounts of information for employees and consumers alike. The combination of the Itanium™ processor and technologies like Autonomy's will soon enable enterprises to enjoy the benefits of faster and completely automatic e-Business solutions. We are very pleased by Autonomy's commitment to optimise their products for our new 64-bit architecture"
At the heart of Autonomy's software is a pattern recognition technology, which has the ability to analyse a piece of text and identify the main ideas. This allows the software to then determine how the text should be categorised, who should see it, what other relevant material it should be linked to, and how it should be tagged - which all happens automatically. Among its 160-plus customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, Barclays Bank, British Aerospace, Clorox, News Corp., Procter & Gamble, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, The Royal Mail and Unilever. In addition, several software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their online publishing, knowledge management, email routing, portal, call center, customer relationship management and document management applications, including Aeneid, CoreChange, Delano, FutureTense, Hyperwave, Insight, Intraspect, Global Recall, Nexor, Open Market, Sagemaker and Verge.
