Virage Opens New Full-Service Internet Video Facility in New York City

Virage to share infrastructure with Associated Press Television Network's (APTN) broadcast headquarters. ABC Television executive recruited to lead operations.

STREAMING MEDIA WEST CONFERENCE, SAN JOSE, California —December 7, 1999—Virage Inc., the recognized market leader in interactive video search products and application services, announced today that it has established a new full-service Internet video facility in New York City. Located at 1995 Broadway, in the heart of New York City's Upper West Side, the new facility will be used to provide comprehensive Internet video application services to Virage customers in Manhattan and the East Coast media corridor. The state-of-the-art facility will be used to support the rapid growth of Virage Interactive™ services.

"I cannot think of a more ideal place to establish a major hub for video on the Internet," said Paul Lego, CEO of Virage. "Sharing satellite feeds and production facilities with the Associated Press and other major broadcasters puts Virage at the heart of America's media production and distribution. As a leading provider of video infrastructure for the broadband economy, Virage is determined to deliver high-quality service and real-time response to its growing list of customers. Our East Coast customers can now count on fast turnaround and local support from Virage for their important video projects." Over the next several months, Virage's 5200-square-foot space will be transformed into a state-of-the-art Internet production facility that will service a growing list of high profile clients around the clock. "From our New York headquarters, Virage will deliver the highest quality encoding and indexing in the industry," said Hal Feldman, executive producer, Virage Interactive NY. "In addition to bringing unparalleled production values to the table, we are affording our New York based media and financial clients direct, local access to our facilities." Virage carefully selected the 1995 Broadway location to leverage the uplink/downlink capabilities of the Associated Press Television Network's (APTN) New York broadcast headquarters. "With APTN, we can receive our clients' materials from anywhere in the world," remarked Feldman. Several other broadcasters share the 1995 Broadway location's resources including Virage clients: the BBC, Telecinco, Globo and Televisia. In addition, the Upper West Side location puts Virage just blocks away from major Virage customers, ABC, CBS, NBC and the FOX television networks.

Before Virage acquired use of the facility, the well-equipped studio was used by the BBC to produce and distribute Alistair Cooke's popular series, "Letter from America," the world's longest running radio program.

Virage also announced today that broadcast television veteran, Hal Feldman, has joined Virage as Executive Producer,Virage Interactive NY. Arriving from the executive ranks of ABC Television, Hal brings 15 years of broadcast television and online media experience to Virage. He added, "I am confident that this state-of-the-art New York facility, coupled with Virage's vision and the superior quality of Virage products and services, will enable the company to strengthen its position as the premiere solution provider for searchable and useable video on the Internet."
