Autonomy Wins Prestigious UK Award For Second Year Running

Technology leader claims Product of the Year prize at Information Management Awards 1999

December 1, 1999 - Autonomy was last night announced overall winner of the Product of the Year category at the Information Management Awards 1999. It is the second year running that the international technology company has claimed the award at the event; this year, it was given for Portal-in-a-Box™, Autonomy's rapid-deployment portal for automated Internet and intranet based information management.

The awards, sponsored by Information Age and hosted at London's Park Lane Hilton hotel, were judged by a panel of independent experts from different fields.

The judges look for the most exciting information management hardware or software product launched during 1999, based on the following key criteria: time management goals, technology components, enhancement of concepts, and understanding and success of information management.

Autonomy's Chief Technical Officer, Richard Gaunt, who accepted the award, said: "We are delighted with the outcome of the judges' decision. Autonomy offers a new information infrastructure for all Knowledge Management, New Media publishing and E-commerce applications, and is fuelling this country's transformation into an Internet economy. Portal-in-a-Box™ is the tool at the forefront of this sea-change. It is fitting that our contribution to the future of industry should be recognized in this way."

Autonomy's software provides a fully automated, intuitive and totally language-independent means of categorizing, cross-referencing, hyperlinking and presenting information. The technology is aimed at maximizing the value of digital information, by automatically personalizing it to users' precise needs.

The IM Awards are the premier industry recognition of the achievement of excellence in the field of Information Management. The Awards include fourteen separate categories for subjects ranging from Customer Information to Document Management, Intranets to Storage products, E-commerce to Information Security.

About Autonomy

Autonomy's technology powers large-scale, personalized systems for knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and electronic commerce. Because of its ability to analyze any piece of text (independent of the document's language) and identify and rank the main ideas, Autonomy can automate a broad range of labor-intensive tasks. These range from categorizing information by subject matter, to inserting hypertext links to related material, to profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.

Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in San Francisco, New York, Washington, DC and Boston, in the United States as well as in Cambridge (England), Paris, Oslo, Sydney, Frankfurt, Milan, Brussels and Amsterdam. Among its 150 customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, Barclays Bank, British Aerospace, Clorox, News Corp., Procter & Gamble, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, and Unilever. In addition, several software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management applications, including SageMaker, FutureTense, Intraspect, Verge, Aeneid, Global Recall, Insight and Nexor.

On July 10, 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (Easdaq: AUTN).
