Timex Chooses Verity E-commerce Solution To Quickly and Easily Match Online Shoppers with Products and Information

Verity Information Server Helps Timex Convert Browsers to Buyers

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 1999-11-29 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise and Internet knowledge retrieval solutions, today announced that Timex Corporation, makers of the largest-selling watch brand in America, has implemented Verity's Information Server to provide online customers with advanced information retrieval throughout its expanded Website. Timex selected Verity's award-winning technology to create an easier and faster way for customers to locate products on their e-commerce site.

"We chose Verity because they were the only vendor we talked to who understood the capabilities we were looking for and whose products were able to deliver those capabilities," said Sally McKenna, Webmaster for Timex. "Verity's flexibility has been fantastic. Everything they promised was delivered, even when our needs changed during the course of the implementation.

"Already this solution is helping our customers quickly and easily locate the products they're interested in," continued McKenna. "The site has been up only a few weeks, and we're already seeing a 40% decrease in the number of people leaving the site within one minute. Because we had such high expectations for the product, we purchased an extra Verity Information Server license for use on our internal Website."

Timex's Website is designed to provide online visitors with an easy way to find the products that match their requirements. But what was unique about the Timex goal was the desire to offer both product and text results simultaneously. Using Verity's software, online customers can find items and information, without knowing specific Timex brand names or how the online product catalog is organized. Customers have several intuitive search capabilities available to them. They can browse Timex's entire inventory of 300 watches or search for a watch by category. If a customer has a specific feature in mind, such as "Indiglo", they can enter that search term to retrieve all watches that match that description. Advanced search facilities enable buyers to select a watch based on a host of features including gender, dual time zones, type of band or face size, water-resistance depth and price.

"The easiest way to lose a sale is for a customer not to find what he or she is looking for. Within one or two mouse clicks, that customer can travel to your competitor's site,' said Ronald Weissman, vice president, strategy and corporate marketing at Verity, Inc. "We designed our product suite to help e-commerce customers turn browsers into buyers by matching people and products. If they can't find it, they can't buy it. We are delighted that Information Server has helped Timex improve the online customer's shopping experience.

Verity Information Server is a valuable tool for precise information retrieval. Using an automatic, server-based query expansion, it turns user requests into detailed, sophisticated queries. Search term highlighting and navigation are supported as standard features to direct users precisely and quickly through query results. Additionally, by maintaining its own index stored apart from the documents, Verity Information Server is non-invasive and unobtrusive - requiring no change to the processes and procedures under which documents are currently stored or maintained.
