Butler Group Chooses Autonomy to Power IT Industry Web Portal
Leading European IT analyst group selects best of breed for its own Web offering
October 13, 1999 - Butler Group, Europe's leading business IT analyst group, has chosen Autonomy's Portal-in-a-Box™ product to power its soon-to-be-launched IT information portal service, which will automatically deliver up-to-date, personalized market intelligence directly to users, from an unlimited number of worldwide sources.
ITPortal.net will be a one-stop market information resource for the entire business IT arena, covering news, opinion, product insights, and industry reports. Autonomy is the only technology that can enable companies to automatically develop intelligent portals based on the relevance of information to each individual user.
Founder and CEO of Autonomy, Dr. Mike Lynch, said: "Butler Group had specific needs when they approached us about developing an Internet portal. Butler knew from its research and its dealings with the country's top IT companies that only Autonomy could enable it to offer a personalized service, based on users' interests, which could automatically handle large volumes of rich, varied, and unstructured data. We are delighted that Portal-in-a-Box™ has proved to be Butler Group's preferred solution."
At the heart of Autonomy's software is a pattern recognition technology, which has the ability to analyze a piece of text and identify the main ideas. This allows the software to then determine how the text should be categorized, who should see it, what other relevant material it should be linked to, and how it should be tagged. This all happens automatically. Autonomy's technology is currently being used by a number of high-profile electronic publishers and e-commerce providers worldwide, including breathe.net, Xoom.com, SFGate, News Corporation, Associated Press, Reuters and Macmillan.
Portal-in-a-Box™'s ability to automatically organize the information within the Internet portal and deliver it to appropriate users means that the content of the site requires no manual structuring. Publishing information in the portal therefore becomes a much more straightforward, less time-consuming and therefore less costly exercise.
About Autonomy:
Autonomy's technology powers large-scale, personalized systems for knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and electronic commerce. Because of its ability to analyze any piece of text (independent of the document's language) and identify and rank the main ideas, Autonomy can automate a broad range of labor intensive tasks. These range from categorizing information by subject matter, to inserting hypertext links to related material, to profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.
Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in San Francisco, New York, Washington DC and Boston, in the United States as well as in Cambridge, England and Oslo, Norway. Among its 150-plus customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, Barclays Bank, British Aerospace, Clorox, News Corp., Procter & Gamble, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, Unilever and Xoom.com. In addition, several software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management applications, including FutureTense, Intraspect, Verge, Aeneid, Global Recall, Insight and Nexor. On July 10, 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange.
