Home Depot Uses Verity E-Commerce Search & Retrieval Solution To Assist Website Visitors In Finding Products and Information

Verity K2 Toolkit Provides Access and Accuracy Across Increasing Volume of HomeDepot.com Content

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - 1999-10-11 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of enterprise and Internet knowledge retrieval solutions, today announced that Home Depot (NYSE: HD) has deployed the Verity K2 Toolkit to provide online customers with advanced information retrieval throughout its expanded home improvement Website. Home Depot chose Verity's proven technology to provide precise and accurate e-commerce search and retrieval with the goal of giving the nation's largest retailer a competitive advantage.

The Verity K2 Toolkit provides Home Depot with a scalable solution to help HomeDepot.com visitors quickly and easily find the right products and services, regardless of the volume of online information or the number of visitors concurrently accessing information on the site. Next year, HomeDepot.com expects to integrate Verity's scalable and precise knowledge retrieval solution into its online product catalog, which is intended to build additional brand loyalty by making it easier for customers to find the information they want and need.

"When it comes to an e-commerce strategy, incorporating the best knowledge retrieval functionality from the start is as important as providing credit card transaction capabilities online. Verity's solution makes it easy for us to help customers locate and find the home improvement information and tools they want and need," said Ron Griffin, Home Depot's CIO. "We chose Verity because we wanted an information retrieval solution that we could continually depend on to provide fast and accurate information retrieval to our customers as our online business dimension rapidly evolves."

HomeDepot.com is designed to extend Home Depot's quality in-store customer service to the Internet by providing Website visitors with project advice and tips, a personalized home page and enhanced interactivity. Using Verity's software, Home Depot enables online customers to find items and information, no matter how simple or complex the question. The use of Verity's "fuzzy search" technology automatically expands a Home Depot customer's request to encompass products and categories, increasing the likelihood that a desired item will be found online.

In addition, the Verity K2 Toolkit allows brokered search across multiple servers and multiple CPUs to provide the most relevant search results from many information sources without sacrificing the speed or accuracy of the results displayed. As the number of users, queries or data increases, K2 applications can keep pace with increased demands by adding new CPUs or servers to the network without bringing down the application. Applications such as HomeDepot.com using the Verity K2 Toolkit, provide 24x7 fault tolerant operations. Failures of individual nodes or servers are isolated from the rest of the system, to insure applications are available when they are needed.

"We are delighted that Home Depot has chosen Verity's robust solution to support its high-growth Internet business," said Ronald Weissman, Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Marketing at Verity, Inc. "Our solutions are designed to support HomeDepot.com both now and in the future. The Verity K2 Toolkit will enable Home Depot to handle the growing volume of customers simultaneously searching HomeDepot.com services and, at the same time, reduce the need for customers to submit multiple requests to find the information they desire."
