Verity Powers Holidays Online with Thomas Cook

Verity solution enables one of the largest holiday travel sites on the Web

SUNNYVALE, CA - 1999-09-20 - Thomas Cook, one of the world's leading international travel groups, is now offering its customers the chance to search for their holidays online (www.thomascook.co.uk). The new site has a comprehensive database of approximately 2.5 million available holidays and late deals, the widest range currently found anywhere on the Internet. Thomas Cook Interactive selected Verity's powerful knowledge retrieval technology so that customers can quickly and easily find the holiday of their choice amongst the large number of deals available on the site.

Thomas Cook Interactive chose Verity Information Server as it was convinced that it is the strongest retrieval offering on the market. The Verity technology offers users an easy and accurate way to search the database. Customers simply need to select their destination and the dates they wish to travel from a series of drop down boxes and the search engine will return a tailored selection of holidays. Customers can also use the advanced search facilities to register their preferences as to the name of the resort, the type of accommodation required, the length of their stay and other details such as sports and creche facilities.

The Thomas Cook website and search system was designed and prototyped over a six month period by NVision, the Internet consultancy and solution provider. NVision used the intuitive Verity technology to ensure that customers always receive relevant results; if the resort requested is not available then Verity Information Server will suggest similar hotels or apartments at a comparable resort nearby. Verity Information Server helps to direct users precisely and quickly through the results by ranking the holidays by relevance.

"We wanted to take advantage of all the opportunities that the Internet offers both for us and our customers. The nature of the Internet means that it is extremely important for our customers to be able to find what they are looking for quickly and easily. Searches must return relevant results otherwise customers will look elsewhere," said Dave Howard, head of IT at Thomas Cook Interactive. "We were also impressed by the scalability of the Verity technology; we were looking for search technology that could deal with significant volumes of queries at the same time."

Mark Neil, UK managing director, Verity Inc., said: "Good knowledge retrieval facilities are key to a successful site as it can mean the difference between gaining a customer and losing one. We have enjoyed working with Thomas Cook Interactive on this project as they have been determined to meet their users' needs. We are delighted they have chosen Verity Information Server as their preferred technology."
