JSB adopts Autonomy products for surfCONTROL division

September 17, 1999 JSB Software Technologies, the international Internet software products company, announced today that it had reached an agreement with Autonomy plc to use Autonomy's technology in its surfCONTROL Internet access control software.

By using Autonomy's technology, surfCONTROL will enhance its ability to automatically analyse the content and meaning of any Web page and determine whether its subject matter is acceptable, according to corporate policy guidelines.

Internet access control originally used negative lists that denied access to specific web sites. SurfCONTROL's patent pending technology pioneered the move to Positive Filtering with sophisticated rules that reflected the policy needs of a business.

At the heart of Autonomy's software is a pattern recognition technology that has the ability to analyse a piece of text and identify the main ideas. This enables the software to then determine how the text should be categorised and who should see it - automatically. Autonomy's technology is currently being used by a number of other high-profile organizations worldwide, including breathe.net, Xoom.com, SFGate, News Corporation, Associated Press, Reuters and Macmillan.

Recent research by the Aberdeen Group suggests that failure to monitor Internet use effectively exposes organizations to "significant legal liabilities, probable bandwidth abuse, and employee productivity gaps." Steve Purdham, President of JSB's surfCONTROL Division, commented: "As the volume of internet content continues to explode, policy decisions based upon static negative lists become more ineffective. Our Positive Filtering approach will become further enhanced by the partnership with Autonomy and the use of it world-beating content analysis technology "

Dr. Mike Lynch, founder and CEO of Autonomy, said: "surfCONTROL's technology protects the interests of both employers and employees by ensuring that Internet abuse is prevented rather than cured. No longer will companies be forced to rely on a flawed approach to Internet access control; instead, surfCONTROL clients will for the first time enjoy Internet access based on automated knowledge of the content of all material accessed."

About Autonomy

Autonomy's technology powers large-scale, personalised systems for knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and electronic commerce. Because of its ability to analyse any piece of text (independent of the document's language) and identify and rank the main ideas, Autonomy can automate a broad range of labour-intensive tasks. These range from categorising information by subject matter, to inserting hypertext links to related material, to profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.

Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in San Francisco, New York, Atlanta and Boston, in the United States as well as in Cambridge, England, Paris, France, Oslo, Norway, and Sydney, Australia. Among its 150 customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, Barclays Bank, British Aerospace, Clorox, News Corp., Procter & Gamble, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, Unilever and Xoom.com. In addition, several software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management applications, including SageMaker, FutureTense, Intraspect, Verge, Aeneid, Global Recall, Insight and Nexor.

On July 10, 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (Easdaq: AUTN)
