IBM to Integrate Virage Products Into e-Business Solutions For Broadcast Industry

The Image Bank Selects Software from IBM and Virage to Create One of the World's Richest Digital Video and Still Image Libraries AMSTERDAM, Sept. 10, 1999 - IBM announced today a development agreement with Virage, Inc., a leader in video indexing and search products, to integrate Virage's award-winning VideoLogger™ and AudioLogger™ products into IBM's media asset management (MAM) solution.

The first customer to capitalize on this integrated e-business offering will be The Image Bank, a leading supplier of motion and still images worldwide. The Image Bank will use the technology from IBM and Virage to digitize and catalog its vast library of stock footage, allowing The Image Bank to improve its digital production processes, tighten linkages to its customers and suppliers, and open up new revenue opportunities.

"By combining the industry-leading Virage applications with the strength of IBM's e-business software, we are leading the way in providing customers such as The Image Bank a choice of rich tools to better manage their digital content," said Steve Canepa, vice president, marketing, IBM Global Media and Entertainment Industry. "With this new technology offering, The Image Bank can help editors and producers locate clips more quickly and efficiently to enhance the overall quality of their respective production elements." IBM's MAM architecture, based on the IBM Digital Library, systematically organizes digital media files and provides smooth connection between disparate work processes, enabling media professionals to locate, retrieve, reuse, manage and share data more quickly and easily from their own computer desktops.

By making rich media assets more accessible, IBM and Virage are helping companies such as The Image Bank to become more competitive in the digital era.

"The essence of our business is acquiring high-quality film content for our clients and enabling them to rapidly realize their creative concepts," said Rick Wysocki, senior vice president, managing director of the film division of The Image Bank. "Greater ease and speed of cataloging and retrieving film clips is key to our success. Virage and IBM have combined two best-of-breed products into one very powerful, end-to-end system that streamlines our entire process and makes our content more valuable and useful to clients." "This agreement marks another major milestone in our ongoing partnership with IBM," said Paul Lego, CEO of Virage. "The power and versatility of IBM's open architecture is an excellent complement to the award-winning features of the Virage product suite. IBM understands the big picture view of media asset management. Global enterprise customers can be confident that a system based on the Virage VideoLogger and IBM Digital Library will be ready for the rigors of business in an increasingly competitive environment." Searchable video is a new class of video technology that enables producers and other media professionals to locate and watch any segment or clip of video on demand at their desktop. Virage's market-leading VideoLogger application is the logical starting point for a wide range of initiatives, including television and film production, Web publishing, video archiving, distributed learning and training, corporate communications and Internet video search.

With this development agreement, Virage joins a select list of leading software companies with which IBM is partnering to develop targeted solutions built on the foundation of an open architecture for media asset management. In the MAM architecture, the IBM Digital Library, running on DB2 Universal Database or Oracle, is used as a common repository for all of a company's digital content and related business information. With a way to manage their digital assets in one place and to link these assets to virtually any best-of-breed application such as the Virage VideoLogger, media companies can now transform themselves into e-businesses.

"Giving users the ability to locate and retrieve specific footage from a vast video library and interact with other software solutions is another part of IBM's overall e-business strategy for the media industry," said Canepa. "e-business is changing the way media companies create, manage, protect and distribute their valuable digital content. In few industries is the potential benefit of e-business greater than in the broadcast industry."
