Autonomy And Breathe Provide First Personalized Information 'Hubs' Via Mobile Phones, Laptops, Personal Digital Assistants And Other Devices Across Europe

New partnership signals convergence of computers and telephony, and exploits technological advances in the way information is aggregated, organized and delivered

August 2, 1999 - People on the move will soon be able to receive any form of information or communication, regardless of whether they have a mobile phone, personal digital assistants or a laptop computer, as they work, wherever they are working. Breathe net today announced that it is partnering with Autonomy to create "personalized information hubs" for mobile professionals across Europe.

Now, people on the move can access information they need from "personalized portals" including breaking company and industry news, SMS messages and faxes, email messages, voicemail using their mobile phones, laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs) or other emerging devices wherever they are working. According to executives at both companies, the partnership signals the convergence of computers and telephony, and exploits technological advances in the way information is aggregated, organized and delivered to revolutionize the way people work on the move. Breathe net will use Autonomy's technology to automatically create and maintain local language, easy-to-navigate portals with advanced personalization features. Autonomy's software will draw on information from thousands sources, automatically categorize it by subject matter, insert hypertext links between all related items and even route information to those most likely to be interested. These personalized hubs, which can include email, Web pages, voicemail, newsfeeds, SMS messages and faxes, will be available simultaneously from such traditional devices as mobile phones or PCs as well as through such emerging technologies as PDA's, Smart phones and interactive TV and radio. Later this year, the companies will launch specialized portal sites aimed at mobile workers in the finance, insurance and accountancy industries. According to breathe net Chief Operating Officer, Sean Gardner, these portals will prove invaluable to traveling professionals.

"If you've ever had to spend time on the road, you know how hard it can be to stay current on industry and company developments while staying in touch with your customers and colleagues," said Gardner. "Soon, no matter where you are in Europe or what device you are using, you will have everything you need at your fingertips, from comprehensive industry information, to the emails and faxes you need to manage your business from the road, to breaking news alerts so you can exploit industry developments for competitive advantage." Gardner explained that these next generation portals would not be possible without key technology partnerships with Autonomy and Oracle amongst others. "Autonomy's technology provides a critical piece of the puzzle," Gardner said. "Because Autonomy has the only technology that can identify the main ideas in any text, it can automatically categorize each document, email or news story, insert hyperlinks to related material and even route it to those individuals most likely to be interested," said Gardner. "By using Autonomy's technology to organize vast amounts of information into easy-to-navigate directories, our new portals will make information easy to find. And by using Autonomy's technology to provide personalized reports and even real-time alerts, we will even be able to anticipate each customer's individual information needs." According to Autonomy founder Mike Lynch, breathe net could become the ultimate destination for mobile working across Europe.

"This partnership will allow breathe net to add unprecedented breadth and depth to their portal sites and provide the most advanced personalization features on the market," said Lynch. "By organizing and filtering vast amounts of Web-based information, emails, voicemails and SMS messages, our technology will help people on the move work smarter. No matter where they are or what kind of device they are using, breathe net will help them bring a wealth of relevant information to bear on their daily work." said Lynch.

About Autonomy

Autonomy's technology powers large-scale, personalized systems for knowledge management, enterprise portals, new media publishing and electronic commerce. Because of its ability to analyze any piece of text (independent of the document's language) and identify and rank the main ideas, Autonomy can automate a broad range of labor intensive tasks. These range from categorizing information by subject matter, to inserting hypertext links to related material, to profiling users based on the ideas in the text they read or write, to delivering information to those most likely to be interested.

Autonomy was founded in 1996 and has offices in San Francisco, New York, Atlanta and Boston, in the United States as well as in Cambridge, England and Oslo, Norway. Among its 150 customers are Alcatel, Associated Press, Barclays Bank, British Aerospace, Clorox, News Corp., Procter & Gamble, Lucent Technologies, Merrill Lynch, SF Gate, Shell International, Semi-tech, The Royal Mail, Unilever and Xoom.com. In addition, several software companies are licensing Autonomy's technology to add intelligence to their online publishing, knowledge management, email routing and document management applications, including SageMaker, FutureTense, Intraspect, Verge, Aeneid, Global Recall, Insight and Nexor. On July 10, 1998, the company went public on the EASDAQ exchange (Easdaq: AUTN).
