Virage Broadens Video Search Strategy for the Internet Consumer Market

Sun Microsystems and RealNetworks to provide video streaming and server technology for the new Virage Interactive services and consumer product initiatives.

New York City, Streaming Media East '99 Conference - June 29, 1999 - Virage, Inc. of San Mateo, CA, the leading provider of searchable and interactive video products and services, announced a series of initiatives with Sun Microsystems, Inc. and RealNetworks that will drive Virage's video search technology directly into Internet mass markets. Virage demonstrated for the first time a consumer-ready version of its real-time VideoLogger™ video cataloging software. It will allow RealVideo producers to make their files searchable throughout the World Wide Web.

Virage also announced that it has selected Sun to provide the primary server technology for Virage Interactive services. Virage plans to develop and release versions of its Virage Video Search Tools (VST), and Virage VideoLogger SDK™ for Sun Enterprise™ servers and the Solaris™ Operating Environment.

Virage and RealNetworks Virage VideoLogger Goes Mass Market Today, Virage demonstrated a consumer friendly version of its powerful VideoLogger video cataloging software. It will allow RealVideo producers to make their files searchable throughout the World Wide Web. The consumer product will target the vast Internet community of RealVideo producers. Today, hundreds of thousands of RealVideo producers are deploying streaming video content on the Web. Virage software will unlock the content and value hidden in millions of RealVideo ".RM files" streaming across the Internet. This demonstration signals the next key step in the evolution and growth of streaming video on the Internet, bringing proven enterprise level software into the hands of the consumers and independent media producers.

Virage VideoLogger technology gathers information by "watching, listening to and reading" the video stream. This information is used to search the video, extracting precise clips from among millions, just as text is searched for on the Internet. The ability to search RealVideo files will broaden the scope of usability for both the video producer and the Web surfer, as content can now be categorized and searched, saving bandwidth and time.

Virage and Sun Microsystems Sun Enterprise Servers to Power Virage Interactive Backroom Sun Enterprise servers and the Solaris Operating Environment will power the video search back end, including video and index data for Virage Interactive. Moreover, Virage plans to productize key components of Virage Interactive software and video search technology for deployment on the Sun(tm) platform. Virage will support Sun's Solaris Operating Environment in the next release of the Virage VideoLogger SDK, v. 3.1, and future versions of Virage Video Search Tools (VST).

"Virage's new video search service provides an engaging user experience that will make Web-based video pervasive throughout the consumer Internet market," said Doug Kaewert, vice president, market development, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Virage's selection of Sun and the port of its video search tools to the Solaris Operating Environment shows that Sun systems are ideal for high-quality, highly-scalable video services and streaming." About Virage Interactive Services Virage Interactive provides content originators, such as media and entertainment companies, enterprise customers, and premiere event and conference producers, with a complete solution for integrating searchable and interactive video into their web sites. Powered by Sun Microsystems' Enterprise servers and Solaris Operating Environment, the service translates video content from television, satellite or tape directly into a hosted and private-labeled video search engine. By providing a hosted index of searchable video, Virage Interactive allows site producers to weave video search throughout their site, retaining complete control over the functionality, as well as the look and feel, of the web pages.
