Virage Showcases New Video Search Applications At Real Networks Conference '99

Leading Internet Video Search Engine Gains Significant Enhancements Including Support for RealSystem™ G2 and Digital Video Indexing, Face Recognition and Optical Character Recognition Virage and RealNetworks use new products to post conference keynotes to the Web SAN FRANCISCO, California--May 5, 1999--Virage, Inc., the pioneer and recognized market leader in providing products and technologies that make video searchable, today demonstrated VideoLogger™ 3.0, the latest version of the companys powerful video cataloging application, and Video Search Tools 1.5, a web-based application which enables organizations to easily publish searchable video on their intranet/extranet or the Internet. Virage and RealNetworks (NASDAQ: RNWK) will also be indexing and publishing onto the Web fully searchable and interactive versions of the RealNetworks Conference '99 keynote speeches using these new products from Virage.

VideoLogger 3.0 The latest edition of Virages flagship product, VideoLogger 3.0, is capable of automatically indexing a wide variety of video formats in real time and outputting that information into any video application or data store, while simultaneously digitizing the video onto a video server. The VideoLogger is already in use by organizations such as CNN Interactive, ABC News, BBC, CBS.com, Fox Sports, General Motors, AltaVista, Harvard Business School and numerous U.S. government agencies. These companies and others rely on VideoLogger to increase productivity, reduce costs, access video-based information and generate new revenue streams with their video content. VideoLogger 3.0 incorporates many new features optimized around the rigorous requirements of 24x7 video production and video publishing environments, including: Real time digital video ingest. VideoLogger 3.0s plug-in architecture allows digital video files (RealVideo, MPEG1, ASF, AVI and DV to name a few) to be indexed in real time during a Virage logging session without requiring additional decoding. VideoLogger 3.0 will ship with RealVideo®G2, QuickTime™, DirectShow™ and analog video plug-ins.

Support for real time face recognition and OCR. VideoLogger 3.0 supports plug-in video analysis engines for real time facial recognition and optical character recognition. These will be the first real time applications of these technologies to video and offer users two additional powerful methods for automatically extracting data from video. The facial recognition and OCR plug-ins will ship later this year.

Multiple simultaneous video encoding. VideoLogger 3.0 can encode video in multiple streaming video formats during a single cataloging session (such as several different bit-rate versions of RealVideo as well as MPEG1 and MPEG2). This enables the same tape to serve multiple functions, from instant news airing to promos to publishing on the Internet, in the format required by each application.

Index extensibility. VideoLogger 3.0 saves the index data it extracts from the video in a fully extensible track architecture that allows users to enrich it with additional information such as GPS data, run-downs or run-logs.

Other new features available on VideoLogger 3.0 include: Capture of high-resolution keyframe images.

Support for capturing teletext data.

Non-linear video cataloging.

Advanced clip marking.

VTR/Deck emulation.

Text track editing.

Video Search Tools 1.5 Virage also demonstrated significant enhancements to its leading video search engine application framework, Video Search Tools (VST). Used in conjunction with the VideoLogger™ and AudioLogger™, VST 1.5 enables anyone with a Web browser to easily search for and play selected video clips. Employing a familiar search engine interface, users can quickly locate video clips based on spoken text, speaker name, on-screen headlines, names of recognized faces, and other criteria or keywords. Users can then play the video from those exact points of interest, eliminating the tedious jogging and time-consuming buffering normally associated with scanning through video content. Using the powerful video clip handling functions built into VST 1.5, users can also assemble and sort clip lists, create edit decision lists (EDLs), email clips, and quickly export video clips to other documents (like presentations).

Combined, VideoLogger 3.0 and VST 1.5 make streaming video more usable by giving users the capability to find and preview any video segment out of hundreds or thousands of hours of content, at the exact point of interest. By turning video playback into an interactive, rather than passive medium, Virage products turn video into accessible information like other data, such as text documents and graphics, already deployed on the internet. Searchable video is the critical starting point for successful on-line training, decision support, corporate communications, interactive web sites applications using video.

"The Virage VideoLogger has become the standard for implementing searchable video in network television production, providing quick and easy access to the video broadcasters want to see, when they want to see it," said Paul Lego, Chief Executive Officer of Virage. "With VideoLogger 3.0 and VST 1.5, we now bring the same functionality and benefits directly to the Internet. In the end, searchable video will have the same dramatic effect on the Web at large as it has had within television newsrooms. It will redefine how people expect to interact with rich media on the Internet." "When used in conjunction with RealSystem G2, Virage products extend the value of video by making it searchable and indexable," said Brett Goodwin, Product Unit Manager, Enterprise Products, RealNetworks. "Virage's software allows people to publish, retrieve and exchange video-based information in the same simple manner with which they handle text and numbers. We are excited to be working with Virage to create a vivid example of the power of these products as we jointly publish the keynote speeches from the RealNetworks Conference 99 directly to the Web in a fully searchable and interactive form." Searchable and Interactive Videos of Conference Keynote Speeches Virage and RealNetworks are collaborating to index and publish onto the Web fully searchable and interactive versions of the RealNetworks Conference '99 keynote speeches. Shortly after the conference starts, visitors to virage.com or real.com websites will be able browse, search and view the video of the highlights and hot topics of the conference.

Virage first introduced its video search engine last year when it published President Clintons Grand Jury Testimony to the Internet in partnership with CSPAN and AltaVista. The event has been broadly described by industry analysts as a watershed event for streaming media on the web. For the first time, users could search through the video, finding and previewing just the parts of the testimony that were of interest. Since then, Virage has partnered with a variety of other content originators to create breakthrough deployments of searchable video in a variety of content categories. A showcase of these searchable video sites, including the Real Conference keynote speeches, can be found at http://www.virage.com/showcase.

About Virage VideoLogger VideoLogger 3.0 is a Windows NT application and a powerful solution development framework. Using Virage's patented media analysis technologies, as well as third party technologies, the VideoLogger "watches, listens to and reads" video in real time, automatically extracting information such as keyframes, time codes, text and an audio profile. This information can also be supplemented by user-defined clips and annotations. Together, they produce a rich, frame-accurate index that provides immediate access to any part of the video, in the same way that a index points to specific pages in a book. VideoLogger 3.0 also works in conjunction with the Virage AudioLogger™ 1.0, the industrys only real time speech recognition, speaker identification and audio classification application designed for video cataloging. Additionally, VideoLogger 3.0 can also control the synchronous encoding/digitization of multiple low-bandwidth versions of the content. This digital video is lined up precisely with the index so users can go to a precise point in the video by selecting a key frame, word or marked clip.
