The Globe and Mail Web Sites Deploy Verity For Comprehensive Knowledge Retrieval on Canadian National Portal Site

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 1999-04-26 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of knowledge retrieval solutions for the enterprise and Internet, today announced that The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, is using Verity's comprehensive knowledge retrieval product family on its national Web sites and for a critical back-office application. Verity's technology provides robust indexing, searching and information retrieval for The Globe and Mail's family of Web sites, and offers a custom back-office solution for managing independent data feeds.

One of the top four media sites in Canada, The Globe and Mail receives over 20 million page impressions per month. The Globe and Mail family of Web sites includes: GLOBEfund.com, Canada's premier daily mutual fund site, GLOBEcareers.com, Canada's largest job site, ChaptersGLOBE, Canada's most popular online bookstore and GLOBEtechnology.com, Canada's perspective on technology news. Globe and Mail Web site visitors use Verity to query the company's expansive news, mutual fund, technology and other data collections, where they can quickly obtain the information they request, organized and relevancy-ranked automatically.

"With Verity Information Server it is easy for us to organize, build and centrally maintain robust indices of the hundreds of thousands of documents stored on our Web and file servers," said Jeff Sherman, Director of Business Planning and Director of Technology at Globe Information Services. "We are pleased with Verity because its solution is easy to use, and is also customizable and scalable, so that we can meet the needs of our growing collections and user populations."

An early adopter of technology, The Globe and Mail was the first newspaper in the world to publish electronically and in print on the same day. Today, the media giant uses Verity on the front-end to allow users to query its extensive database, and on the back-end as part of a customized search and extraction engine that manages the flow of custom information from The Globe and Mail to various independent news providers, such as RTI and NewsEDGE.

"The Globe and Mail family of sites function as a nationwide portal for business and personal finance information in Canada. We are very pleased to be working with The Globe and Mail to deliver powerful, robust and scalable knowledge retrieval across Canada," said Ronald Weissman, Vice President of Strategy, Corporate Development and Corporate Marketing at Verity, Inc.
