SAIC Deploys Autonomy's Portal-In-A-Box™ To Personalize Information For Health Solutions Unit
San Francisco, Calif. (January 31, 1999) - Autonomy, Inc., today announced that Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), a diversified high-technology research and engineering company, is deploying Autonomy's Portal-In-A-Box™ to build an enterprise information portal (EIP) for its Health Solutions unit.
The portal will allow SAIC employees to locate useful internal and external documents, identify colleagues with specific expertise, avoid duplication of effort and exploit late-breaking developments in the health care industry. In addition, SAIC Health Solutions has signed a reseller agreement with Autonomy to offer the benefits of Portal-In-A-Box™ to SAIC health care customers.
Autonomy's Portal-In-A-Box™ automatically organizes information from thousands of internal and external sources into easy-to-navigate directories. It also builds employee profiles and creates personalized reports and alerts. Because Autonomy's technology can analyze a piece of text and identify the main ideas, it eliminates many of the time-consuming and costly functions involved with building and maintaining an EIP, including categorizing, tagging, hypertext linking and personalizing information.
Ludwig Zink, chief technology officer for SAIC's health care organization, explained that SAIC's customers must be able to access critical patient, administrative and financial information, then share that information in real time across multiple offices and health care facilities.
"Because Autonomy's Portal-In-A-Box™ makes information easy to find, whether from internal sources (such as e-mail and Word documents) or external sources (such as the Internet), we can build on existing work instead of reinventing the wheel," said Zink. "The personal reports and alerts also help our engineers and scientists stay on top of the latest medical, technical and administrative developments to serve our customers more effectively."
According to Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch, Autonomy's technology makes each employee's knowledge base accessible to others. It uses a profiling system that automatically identifies an employee's area of expertise. It bases the profile on the issues each user researches on intranets, the ideas in documents, e-mail messages submitted to the system, and the topics followed.
"We designed Portal-In-A-Box™ to make it easy for employees to find not only relevant documents, news articles and e-mail messages, but the information to contact colleagues with the right expertise as well," Lynch said. "To gain and maintain competitive advantage, you need to know what expertise exists in your organization. Portal-In-A-Box™ lets you access knowledge throughout the entire organization, whether an employee is in the office next door or thousands of miles away."
Zink added that Autonomy's Portal-In-A-Box™ allows users to receive personalized reports on topics, no matter how specific or arbitrary that topic.
"It is unnecessary to select pre-set categories or to wade through the results of keyword searches," said Zink. "For example, a health care patient who has been diagnosed with diabetes could search for additional information about effective treatments and answers to questions about insulin. With Autonomy's technology, that patient can locate the community or 'channel' for diabetes where he can find the latest articles on diagnosis and treatment, talk with others who have experience with dealing with diabetes, locate support groups and check with providers regarding medications and diet concerns. The patient can also link to Web-site applications to record symptoms. Unlike Internet search engines, which return two million pages on a search for diabetes, Portal-In-A-Box™ returns only content relative to the topic."
