Searchable Video of Clinton Impeachment Trial

SAN MATEO, Calif.--Virage and AltaVista have teamed up to provide people from all over the world with ongoing searchable video coverage of President Clinton's impeachment trial on the Internet at http://video.altavista.com/impeach. Searchable video transforms video from a passive viewing experience to one that is fully interactive and gives people control over what they want to see, when they want to see it.

This unique Internet coverage will be available throughout the trial and will be updated on a daily basis.

Virage's revolutionary video search engine works exactly the way that people are already accustomed to finding text-based information on the Web. Users type in a keyword or phrase describing the subject they are interested in and they are instantly provided a list of the video segments that match their query. From there, they can read a transcript of what is being said or play the streaming video that accompanies that segment. They may also e-mail the clip to other people, allowing video-based information to be shared and distributed effortlessly.

"By making the video of President Clinton's impeachment trial searchable, Virage and AltaVista are providing people with an incredibly powerful method for viewing, understanding and referencing this historic event," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "Searchable video takes advantage of the interactive nature of the Internet and turns video into a powerful decision support and collaboration tool." Searchable video is made possible by Virage's VideoLogger software. The VideoLogger automatically "watches, listens to and reads" video, extracting information that enables users to search for and find segments they are interested in.
