Compaq's AltaVista Selects Virage for the Internet's Largest Image Search Site

Virage's Image Search products allow AltaVista users to search over 10 million digital photographs and graphics over the Internet by visual content SAN MATEO, Calif.--Oct. 13, 1998--Virage, Inc. today announced that AltaVista has licensed and deployed Virage's Image Search products on the Internet's largest image database system, AV Photo Finder (http://image.altavista.com/). Virage and Compaq engineers collaborated to develop AV Photo Finder, a new and revolutionary image search feature on the AltaVista search site. The new feature allows users to easily query, search and retrieve over 10 million distinct images found on the World Wide Web, including black-and-white and color photographs, illustrations and other artwork. The unveiling of AV Photo Finder represents the first joint development project and commercial venture between Virage and Compaq's AltaVista division.

"We chose Virage's Image Search products for AV Photo Finder quite simply because they're state of the art. The Virage Image Search products scale effortlessly and perform reliably and quickly under intensive loads characteristic of the global search traffic on the World Wide Web," said Barry Rubinson, chief technology officer of AltaVista. "With an initial data store of 10 million images it was imperative that the technologies we incorporated be capable of supporting a massive collection of data that we expect will easily grow an order of magnitude in terms of both image content and user traffic-Virage's products meet that need." Today's announcement comes just three weeks after Virage's success with the Internet's first commercial video search site, AltaVista Clinton Testimony Video (http://video.altavista.com), which allows users to search for and view President Clinton's grand jury testimony by entering a keyword or phrase.

"The success of the Clinton Testimony Video Search and AV Photo Finder projects represent Virage's unique ability to leverage its leadership in the media production and broadcast markets into the broader consumer market of the Internet," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "Virage will continue to develop products that utilize the Internet to unlock new revenue streams from strategic video and image repositories found in Fortune 1000, Media, Entertainment and Government markets." About Virage Image Search Products Virage's Image Search product suite consists of the Visual Information Retrieval engine (VIR) and the Image Read/Write Toolkit (IRW). The VIR engine revolutionizes the way images are utilized and deployed by organizations. VIR allows images to be searched for and sorted in the same way that people do: by comparing them visually, instead of relying solely upon keywords to describe them. The VIR engine defines and analyses each image by four primary attributes-color, composition, structure and texture. These attributes are quantitative measurements that can be used to compare images based upon their visual characteristics. Virage's VIR engine has been licensed to over 200 customers worldwide, including Oracle, Informix, Canon, Nikon and Sybase.

The Image Read/Write Toolkit reads, writes and creates thumbnails for image files of various formats. It can also translate industry standard image formats to and from a generic RGB-buffer format, perform format and colorspace conversions and support most image compression options.
