MD Consult Integrates Verity Knowledge Retrieval Technology Into Comprehensive Physician Online Service

Verity Products Provide Connection Into Extensive Collection of Medical Information

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 1998-10-13 - Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRTY), a leading provider of knowledge retrieval solutions for the enterprise and Internet, today announced that MD Consult, a premier online medical information service available at http://www.mdconsult.com, has integrated Verity's DB Gateway knowledge retrieval products into its comprehensive product offering for physicians. Physicians can now have the latest research and up-to-date medical information at their fingertips using MD Consult which incorporates Verity's powerful indexing, searching and viewing capabilities.

Created through a joint venture of leading medical publishers, MD Consult features the most comprehensive collection of brand-name clinical reference and current awareness information available on the Internet. MD Consult simplifies the way physicians find and use medical information to help them answer clinical questions and keep up-to-date efficiently. The service includes unlimited access to:

• 37 leading medical reference books;

• The full-text articles of 47 premier medical journals;

• Prescription information for more than 30,000 medications;

• More than 500 peer-reviewed clinical practice guidelines;

• Customizable patient education handouts covering more than 6,000 topics;

• Personalized daily summaries of important articles and announcements in clinical medicine;

• A physician's review of medicine in the lay press;

• More than 300 modules of Category 1 CME credit.

MD Consult's information, which is continuously updated as new content becomes available, resides in relational databases. It is automatically indexed and searched via Verity's DB Gateway products. This solution provides physicians with immediate access to authoritative, relevant medical information with absolute security and privacy.

While the MD Consult service launched a year ago utilizing another third party search engine, it is in the final phase of a complete transition to Verity. Physicians are now able to search larger collections of data with improved precision, while realizing significantly faster response times.

"Our service uses Verity's indexing and searching products because its solution scales as we add users and content, it provides increased functionality and it delivers within the response times that our users demand," said Tom Hamilton, Vice President, Technology for MD Consult. "With Verity, we have an excellent platform from which to further enhance our search functionality."

"Like many companies, all of MD Consult's medical information is in relational databases which we make accessible through our DB Gateway Toolkit product," said Anthony Bettencourt, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Verity, Inc. "MD Consult's leading-edge service requires the scalability, responsiveness and precision provided by Verity in order to deliver time-critical information to the healthcare community. We are pleased to be working with MD Consult, as they develop the next generation of knowledge products and services for healthcare professionals."
