Virage Signs Joint Development and Technology Licensing Agreement with IBM to Produce Audio Cataloging and Analysis Products

Virage will be "first to market" with a real time Video Cataloger utilizing IBM's speech-to-text recognition engine and speaker identification technology SAN MATEO, Calif--Sept. 29, 1998--Virage, Inc. today announced an agreement with IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) in which IBM's innovative speech technology will be used to bring audio cataloging and analysis products to the broadcast industry and corporate media management markets. One of the first outcomes of the development effort will be the integration of IBM's real time speech-to-text recognition engine, broadcast speech libraries and speaker identification technology with Virage's industry leading Video Cataloger.

"The agreement with Virage underscores IBM's commitment to bring world-class, innovative ViaVoice speech and audio technologies to the enterprise computing market," said W.S. "Ozzie" Osborne, general manager of IBM's Speech Business Unit. "The integration of speaker independent speech-to-text, speaker ID and advanced audio analysis into a single real time product envelope represents a powerful `first to market' coup for both IBM and Virage. The Virage Video Cataloger provides IBM with a high volume delivery platform for its audio technologies into the broadcast and Fortune 1000 markets." "Virage has a market-proven tradition of incorporating best-of-breed technologies into our products, whether they are developed by our own research and development efforts or strategic third parties," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "IBM, through years of dedicated research and product commercialization, has developed an advanced and mature array of audio technologies. This agreement provides Virage with access to those technologies and ensures that we will be able to deliver speaker independent audio cataloging and analysis products to our customers." The enhancement of Virage's Video Cataloger with new speech and audio analysis capabilities will extend the cataloger's existing value to broadcasting organizations. The new capabilities and real-time performance will permit broadcasters to directly tap and analyze the audio track of incoming video feeds, transcribing the embedded speech into text that can then be used to index, search and distribute individual video clips throughout the editorial and production processes. In addition, these new capabilities will broaden the Video Cataloger's use in corporate enterprise markets where video is the primary media type used for developing and distributing marketing, product and training information.

"At CNN, the vast majority of video that we deal with is raw footage that contains no embedded textual material, such as closed captioning, from which to construct an index of the content," said Kevin Ivey, Vice President of Research & Development at Cable News Network, Inc. "We are very excited about the recent Virage-IBM agreement because of its potential to yield products which allow broadcasters to extract and index, in real time, the wealth of information contained in audio tracks. The ability to search incoming news feeds by speaker or by spoken content would enable us to accelerate the rate at which we bring stories to air, one of CNN's major objectives. We see this as an important developing component to our ongoing content management efforts." Virage also anticipates rapid adoption of these technologies by the military and intelligence community where automated real-time monitoring of satellite feeds and foreign news broadcasts would strongly benefit intelligence gathering and analysis. All Virage audio technologies will be engineered into "commercial off the shelf" (COTS) products and will include an extensible development environment based on standard APIs that allow organizations to easily integrate proprietary or mission specific audio, speech and context analysis plug-ins.
