WebWare Taps Virage to Provide Video Cataloging for Enterprise-Level Media Asset Management Solutions

Leading global systems integrator CompuCom to resell and implement combined WebWare/Virage solution San Francisco, Calif.--August 31, 1998--WebWare Corp., the preeminent Web-based Media Asset Management provider and Virage, the recognized leader in media cataloging and media analysis, today announced an agreement whereby WebWare will add Virage's Video Cataloging capabilities to their Media Asset Management By Objects (WebWare MAMBO) system. The combined Virage/WebWare solution provides Fortune 1000 companies with the ability to more effectively use and integrate their growing number of video assets into global brand management strategies.

WebWare and Virage will demonstrate the combined Video Cataloger/MAMBO solution at the Seybold San Francisco/Publishing 98 Product Exposition in San Francisco, September 1-3 at Moscone Center (North Hall) in WebWare's booth #4181.

Fortune 1000 companies wishing to implement this powerful, enterprise-level video logging and media asset management solution will be serviced by the Digital Media Services Division of CompuCom Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CMPC) CompuCom, a leading global provider of network integration services for large enterprises, will resell and integrate the solution.

"WebWare's partnership with Virage is a natural evolution of the digital media management market," said John McCormick, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "Organizations are increasingly looking at how to manage and make better use of their video assets, and digital media management providers would be hard pressed to develop the functionality of Virage's Video Cataloger. By integrating the products, WebWare will quickly give its customers the best of both worlds." "Our customers rely upon MAMBO to scale and seamlessly wrap around disparate workflows to meet changing business needs. Increasingly they have been asking us for a more powerful way to leverage their growing number of video assets," said Lauren Flanegan, chairman and chief executive officer of WebWare. "We selected Virage's Video Cataloger because it is the leading video logging application and provides the intelligent cataloging our customers need to quickly and easily find and repurpose their video assets. Furthermore, the Video Cataloger's development tools made the integration process painless." "We're excited that WebWare and CompuCom have selected the Virage Cataloger for their comprehensive media asset management solution," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. WebWare and CompuCom have the necessary ingredients to deliver media asset management to mainstream corporate customers, in particular, marketing and creative professionals involved in advertising, corporate marketing and brand management. WebWare provides a Web-based solution for video and image management that fits easily into a customer's workflow, and CompuCom provides the integration skills and market reach that makes the customer's decision cost-effective and turnkey." "The ability to offer end-to-end Media Asset Management and workflow solutions, combining best of breed technologies from WebWare and Virage offers new opportunities for us and our global customers," said Craig Prizant, general manager of CompuCom's Digital Media Services Division.

WebWare MAMBO is the most open, scalable, flexible and extensible media asset management solution available today. Designed for ease of mass customization and for today's client/server and extranet environments, MAMBO employs a distributed object server model and is tightly integrated with Acrobat/PDF, QuickTime, ColorSync, Quark's and Virage's technologies. WebWare MAMBO is the industry's first media asset management solution that seamlessly integrates existing databases, back-end workflow systems and front office functions with a Web-based user interface. Comprehensive MAMBO-based workflow solutions from document management, to catalog production, to video production, to Webflow management, to one-to-one marketing and e-commerce can be designed running on multiple servers, all feeding into a central media asset metadata repository.

The Virage Video Cataloger is the logical starting point for anyone creating or distributing significant amounts of video. Using advanced media analysis algorithms that automatically watch, listen to and read a video stream, the Video Cataloger intelligently extracts metadata--keyframes, time codes, textual information and an audio profile--from the video in real time. This information can then be published in a wide variety of formats, including into WebWare MAMBO, where it becomes the foundation of a rich, frame-accurate index that provides immediate, nonlinear access to any segment of the video.

In parallel to the indexing process, the Video Cataloger also controls the encoding of a streamable version of the original content. Synchronized encoding and indexing allows users to intelligently navigate through the video by using the index to go directly to the exact point of interest, rather than streaming it from start to finish. This approach provides video previewing that is faster than real time, conserves valuable network bandwidth and dramatically reduces costs associated with editing and repurposing video.

As part of the agreement, WebWare will also license the Virage Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) Engine. Virage's VIR Engine is the most widely adopted image recognition technology available today, providing powerful analyses and comparisons based upon the visual content of images.
