Lockheed Martin Leads Growing List of Companies Selecting Virage for System Integration Partnership

Virage certified system integrators and value added resellers accelerate Virage's growth in the media-rich military-intelligence and government markets SAN MATEO, Calif.--August 25, 1998--Virage, the recognized market leader of video cataloging and media analysis software, today announced the formation of a broad network of System Integrators (SIs) and Value Added Resellers (VARs) for the military-intelligence and U.S. government communities. Anchoring this strategy is Lockheed Martin's Western Development Laboratories (WDL). Lockheed Martin WDL represents a growing list of integration partners that have selected the Virage Video Cataloger and VIR Engine for the development of powerful Web and LAN solutions for video and image analysis, media management and Internet video publishing.

Lockheed Martin WDL joins Digital Solutions & Multimedia Concepts, Inc. (DSMCi), The Content Group and EdgeNet Technologies, Inc. in forming the core of a comprehensive network of certified SIs and VARs that will provide Virage products to government and military intelligence agencies, one of Virage's fastest growing market segments. Today, these partners are actively engaged in deploying a broad array of video and image exploitation systems in the U.S. government that deliver: Real-time video and media ingest and encoding Real-time video publishing and distribution over secure intranets & the WWW Real-time video decision support and analysis "Area of interest" video analysis Media asset management Single site and distributed, multisite video repositories Video-based distance learning and training "The US Government and the Military Intelligence community represent the world's largest and most sophisticated repositories of video and high definition images. The component architecture and development tools of Virage's Video Cataloger are ideally suited to support both classified and mission specific applications," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "We've taken the most advanced video and image analysis technology and engineered it into a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product that our partners can extend to support any agency's unique media exploitation and analysis methods." "Lockheed Martin selected Virage because its video cataloging and media analysis products are the only ones that integrate easily into our customer's Oracle database environments and secure intranet applications," said Tony Mangerie, director of Lockheed Martin Western Development Laboratories. "The Virage Video Cataloger is the critical first step for application workflows that integrate video in real time to Web-based information management systems, media query systems and Web-based distance learning applications." "Virage's Video Cataloger and associated development environment allow us to publish indexed video metadata directly into an application's file system, a database management system or any other file format that our clients require. This flexibility permits both rapid prototyping and scalable deployment of video management and distribution systems," said Duane Shugars, chief operating officer of DSMCi. "Additionally, the ability to configure and control multiple Video Catalogers in parallel makes Virage the logical front end for enterprise environments, such as large scale agency archives or shared multisite content repositories, that require an integrated media ingest facility capable of populating DBMSs with terabytes of information in real time or automated batch mode." "The Virage Video Cataloger is a strategic component of the Content Group's successful video production workflow solution," said Timothy O'Brien, president of the Content Group. "Our clients need the ability to index and catalog video content as well as integrate this data into their existing production tools, database applications, and distribution mechanisms. Ultimately, the Virage Video Cataloger is a critical part of an end-to-end content management solution for video." "Partnering with Virage provides us access to one of the most useful and in demand products that we've ever seen--the Virage Video Cataloger," said Michael Garvey, president of EdgeNet Technologies, Inc. "The Video Cataloger optimizes the use of video by allowing users to effectively preview video storyboards before streaming encoded versions directly to their desktop. Furthermore, the Video Cataloger's configurable design provides us with the flexibility to integrate it seamlessly into each of our customer's usage environments, avoiding the addition of an ancillary application to their workflow." The Virage Video Cataloger is the logical starting point for anyone creating or distributing significant amounts of video. It transforms video into a powerful data type that is both compelling and profitable in both Web and LAN environments. Using advanced media analysis algorithms that automatically watch, listen to and read a video stream, the Video Cataloger intelligently extracts metadata--keyframes, time codes, textual information and an audio profile--from the video in real time. This information becomes the foundation of a rich, frame-accurate index that provides immediate, nonlinear access to any segment of the video.

In parallel to the indexing process, the Video Cataloger also controls the encoding of a streamable version of the original content. Synchronized encoding and indexing allows users to intelligently navigate through the video by using the index to go directly to the exact point of interest, rather than streaming it from start to finish. This approach provides video previewing that is faster than real-time, conserves valuable network bandwidth and dramatically reduces costs associated with editing and repurposing video.

Today's announcement is the first of a series of channel and OEM programs under development at Virage. Virage remains actively engaged in recruiting additional GSA approved SIs and VARs. Interested parties should contact Tim Demski at (410) 592-8740 or tdemski@virage.com.
