Verity Gains Momentum In Legal Market

Key Solutions Providers Standardize on Verity for Large-Scale Information Retrieval Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif - 1998-07-23 - Verity, Inc. (NASDQ:VRTY), the recognized leader of knowledge retrieval solutions for the enterprise and Internet, announced today that three leading providers of legal information have begun using Verity software: LOIS, Inc. (Law Office Information Systems) to deliver the LOIS Electronic Law Library which provides subscription-based access to online legal databases; The Association of Trial Lawyers of America to deliver "Exchange," a member litigation support service; and Law Manager, Inc. to enhance "Law Manager 98," a comprehensive legal information system.

LOIS uses Verity Information Server and Verity Agent Server to deliver an online service that enables lawyers to dial into its information network via the Internet to access more than 30 million pages of state and federal law.

"We are very excited about the advanced capabilities of the Verity products. With these tools, we have been able to offer our customers powerful new ways to access the law and differentiate LOIS from traditional legal online services," said Kyle Parker, President of LOIS. "We chose Verity's technology because it is the only solution that can provide us with full-text retrieval and the personalization that we need to meet the research needs of lawyers, judges, law librarians and other professionals who need to know the law." LOIS is available at www.loislaw.com.

The Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the world's largest trial bar, whose members represent injured consumers, has moved the "Exchange" -- its extensive litigation information databases -- to the Internet using Verity's Information Server and DB Access products. This litigation information, in the form of trial-level case information and documents, resides in ATLA's Exchange. The Exchange provides more than 55,000 of the Association's member trial lawyers with the ability to search and obtain litigation information and documents prior to and during trial. The service also includes case profiles, abstracts and references, previously available only through mail or telephonic communication with the Association. The site is available at http://exchange.atla.org.

"Our online service is designed to complement our existing mail and telephone support services by providing real-time information to ATLA members," said Gerry Miller, Director of The Association of Trial Lawyers of America's Exchange. "Verity's products allow us to display text and indexed data and then permit the connections to retrieve, view and use litigation information immediately."

Law Manager, Inc., has added "Search Manager" to its highly successful case management, docketing and records management product suite. Search Manager adds robust full-text search capabilities to Law Manager 98. Davood Tashayyod, CEO of Law Manager, Inc., said "The integration of Verity's technology with Law Manager's case and records management products will continue to keep Law Manager a dominant player in the legal information systems industry."

In its first implementation of this technology, Law Manager, Inc. has integrated Search Manager with Records Manager and Conflicts Manager to provide a high performance record management system for use in the New York offices of Cleary, Gotthleib, Steen & Hamilton. This system will be eventually be rolled out to 1,100 users worldwide.

"The kinds of solutions being developed by LOIS, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America and Law Manager exemplify the next generation of advanced legal information products and services," noted Anthony Bettencourt, Verity's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing. "Fast and precise access to information is critical to the legal community and the market migration to the next generation of interactive, Web-based and high- performance solutions presents Verity with an excellent growth opportunity."
