Virage Named Market Winner by Frost & Sullivan

New report identifies Virage as leader of the burgeoning video logger market SAN MATEO, Calif.--July 21, 1998--Virage, Inc. today announced that its Video Cataloger has been named the premiere video logger by Frost & Sullivan, a leading market research and consulting company, in a new report on the U.S. Digital Media Management Market.

Frost & Sullivan's report declares Virage the "market winner," based in part upon an aggressive market entry in the final quarter of 1997 that resulted in the company's 49.5 percent (and increasing) share of the video logger market. The report also recognizes the Video Cataloger's technological superiority, stating "Virage has the most advanced video logger available." It goes on to identify the company's effective partnering strategy with other leaders in the digital media industry, including Avid Technology, Cinebase Software, Informix, Oracle, Microsoft, RealNetworks, Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems, as key to Virage's success.

"Video logging is an emerging new aspect of digital media management and the market for high-end applications is expected to experience tremendous growth over the next seven years," said John McCormick, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. "Virage has aggressively positioned itself as the market leader with superior technology and a strong distribution strategy." "Since debuting the Video Cataloger, we have experienced a tremendous demand for this application-first from broadcasters and video professionals, but more recently from Web publishers, government agencies, Fortune 1000 companies and educational institutions," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage.

"Frost & Sullivan's report reaffirms what our customers have been telling us, that the Video Cataloger is the first application to make video-based solutions pervasive in enterprise markets by creating and publishing intelligent video via the Web." The Virage Video Cataloger is the logical starting point for anyone creating or distributing significant amounts of video. It transforms video into a powerful data type that is both compelling and profitable in both Web and client-server environments. Using advanced media analysis algorithms that automatically watch, listen to and read a video stream, the Video Cataloger intelligently extracts metadata-keyframes, time codes, textual information and an audio profile-from the video in real-time. This information becomes the foundation of a rich, frame-accurate index that provides immediate, non-linear access to any segment of the video.

In parallel to the indexing process, the Video Cataloger can also control the encoding of a streamable version of the original content. Synchronized encoding and indexing allows users to intelligently navigate through the video by using the index to go directly to the exact point of interest, rather than streaming it from start to finish. This approach provides video previewing that is faster than real-time, conserves valuable network bandwidth and dramatically reduces costs associated with editing and repurposing video.
