Carlos Montalvo Joins Virage as VP of Marketing

SAN MATEO, Calif.--June 23, 1998--Virage, Inc., the leading supplier of video cataloging and media analysis solutions, today announced the appointment of Carlos Montalvo to the position of vice president of marketing. Montalvo is responsible for developing and managing the company's product, business development and communication strategy. He joins Virage at a time when the company is aggressively growing its product suite and strategic partner base in response to surging demand for its video cataloging products.

"Carlos is a true visionary in the valley's digital media community, with the experience and know-how to translate those visions into market reality," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "His proven track record in driving media technologies to mature products will be extremely valuable to Virage. Moreover, his team oriented management style and market knowledge will create a powerful pull factor in attracting key talent to Virage as we manage rapid growth over the coming year." With over 15 years of experience in the computer industry, Montalvo is a vanguard in the advancement of digital media. He comes to Virage from Cinebase Software, Inc., where he was vice president of marketing. Prior to Cinebase, Montalvo was corporate vice president of Apple Computer's Interactive Media Group, where he was responsible for Apple's entire line of QuickTime products and technologies. He was also director of marketing for Apple's Entry Systems division. Additionally, Montalvo's career includes positions at Xerox and the National Science Foundation.

"Virage's product suite provides the necessary starting point and a much needed market catalyst for a broad array of video-based media initiatives, such as digital TV, Web publishing, distance learning and media asset management," said Carlos Montalvo. "Virage's product development program and strategic partner base provide an exciting opportunity to develop and deploy critical foundation technology and integrated solutions with companies like Avid Technology, Informix, Microsoft, Oracle, Real Networks, Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems." Virage's Video Cataloger automates the indexing and publishing of video in real time by intelligently watching, reading and listening to a video stream. In effect, the Video Cataloger cracks open a video, analyzes its contents and extracts critical textual and image data to represent the content. This data is published as a Video Description Format (VDF) file which can then be deployed across a wide range of enterprise and Internet video-based systems and tools, including video servers, text and image search engines, Internet "spiders," media asset management systems, post production systems and broadcast servers.

As a result of the logging process, users are able to search for and find the material they need much more effectively and quickly than ever before, increasing their productivity. Personalized content delivery also becomes a reality, as content providers and distributors gain immediate, non-linear access to all segments of their video, making it possible to dynamically match viewers' interests with appropriate video footage.

About Virage, Inc.

The Virage Video Cataloger is setting the standard for real-time indexing and distribution of video across the enterprise, while the company's Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) Engine is the most widely adopted image recognition technology available today. Virage customers rely on these products as the critical foundation technology for accessing and distributing media for digital TV, Web publishing, distance learning or media asset management initiatives. Headquartered in San Mateo, California, Virage was founded in 1993 to provide organizations with advanced methods for accessing and leveraging diverse media assets.
