Avid and Virage Team to Deliver Integrated News Cataloging, Browsing and Production Solution for Broadcasters

New cataloging and retrieval features in AvidNews Media Browse to improve quality of programming while reducing time and expense in bringing stories to air LAS VEGAS--April 6, 1998--At this week's 1998 National Association of Broadcasters Conference (NAB98), Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID) and Virage, Inc. announced an agreement to deliver a complete news cataloging, low-resolution media browsing and production solution for news broadcasters. Avid has selected Virage's Video Cataloger to be the video input and indexing system for the AvidNews Media Browse system. Incorporating the Virage Video Cataloger into the Media Browse system will provide the automatic indexing of media content as it gets recorded, enabling news journalists, editors, producers and directors to effectively search, browse and pre-edit all of their incoming videos from the desktop. The combination of Virage's intelligent media indexing with Avid's proven news production tools promises to improve the quality of programming by providing improved access to source video while dramatically reducing the time and expense associated with news production.

"This agreement reflects our commitment to provide broadcasters with a comprehensive integrated offering that revolutionizes the news production process," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "By combining the Virage Video Cataloger with Media Browse, broadcasters will be able to realize the cost-savings potential of the next generation newsroom systems and better leverage their media content into emerging distribution channels." Media Browse is the first system to allow news teams to simultaneously browse and pre-edit video on the same workstations they use to script stories and manage rundowns. The system enables journalists, editors and producers to access and browse digitized video, scripts and rundowns, making the news production process faster, more efficient and more creative. Once the appropriate clips have been located, users can rough-cut their own edits and then publish these decisions as an edit decision list (EDL) or as an Open Media Framework® (OMF) file for finishing on a high-resolution system. A major hurdle in this process has been the ability to efficiently locate appropriate video clips among the many sources.

The Avid/Virage system will clear that hurdle by providing a system that merges sophisticated media indexing and management with the core production processes. In the new system, Virage will manage the input of all video content into the Media Browse system. Virage will also provide a sophisticated encoding management application, which will schedule and control video capture. Using state-of-the-art technology to automatically watch, listen to and read a video stream in real-time, Virage's Video Cataloger will generate a rich metadata index of the content as it is captured. This index will be accessible by the news organization via an enhanced Media Browse system client--providing a powerful, time-based media catalog to writers, editors, producers and directors. Users will be able to perform detailed queries and immediately view the results, in storyboard format, at their desktops. This presentation allows users to quickly preview the content and go directly to the appropriate segments, without having to fast-forward or rewind through the entire video.

"The combination of Avid's revolutionary Media Browse low-res media browsing solution with Virage's video cataloging offers broadcasters a powerful tool to produce news and track their digital assets quicker, better and more efficiently," said David Olson, senior vice president and general manager of Avid's broadcast news division. "Avid is dedicated to bringing the most powerful digital tools to the newsroom. When we decided to improve upon the media input and indexing facilities in Media Browse, Virage emerged as the obvious choice because of its strong technology, clear understanding of the broadcast market and compelling product vision. Our two products combined offer a powerful one-two punch that will help change the way news is produced." As part of the agreement, Avid becomes a reseller of the Virage Video Cataloger. The Media Browse system with integrated Virage cataloging technology is targeted for availability by the end of 1998.
