Virage Video Cataloger Plays Key Role in the BBC's Vision of Broadcasting in the 21st Century

SAN MATEO, Calif.--February 27, 1998--The Virage Video Cataloger is one of the key products used in the development of the BBC's Pilot Operating Centre (POC), which is being announced this week. A showcase of the latest digital technologies that promise to revolutionize the broadcast model, the POC uses Virage's Video Cataloger to manage the transformation of the BBC's analog video into indexed digital content that can be dynamically narrowcasted to viewers based on individual preferences. Nicknamed "Where's Q?", the POC demonstrates how broadcasting could change in the next century by offering a wider and more flexible viewing experience.

Set in a plush, living room setting with the latest video and computing technology, the Pilot Operating Centre is a window into the future of broadcasting. The POC model breaks away from the current linear method of producing and viewing television programming. For example, instead of having to watch a soap opera from start to finish, viewers can choose to select and view only the specific storylines they wish to follow. Sports fans can run a search on their favorite players and only watch the action involving that player. Concerned viewers can search for the latest developments on breaking news stories.

The Video Cataloger makes all of these scenarios possible by extracting metadata from a source video to construct a rich index into the content. This metadata is stored in an Informix database which links to video servers, making it easier for broadcasting companies to locate and playback almost any segment of a particular video.

The POC also provides insight into the future of video production. This technology enables producers to view footage from a remote location, and make instant decisions about which scenes need to be re-shot. By making it easy to index and retrieve specific scenes, the Virage Video Cataloger also streamlines the video editing process.

"Virage is very proud to have been chosen by the BBC as the enabling technology for this showcase," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "As a pioneer in media management for the broadcast industry, Virage will continue leading the charge for dynamic media publishing as prototypes like the POC move off of the drawing board and into the living room."
