Virage to Manage Microsoft NetShow 3.0 Video Content with the Virage Media Management System

Virage to catalog NetShow content for easy searching and retrieval PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- January 26, 1998 -- Virage, Inc. today announced that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft Corp. to incorporate NetShow streaming video technology into the Virage Media Management System. The Virage Media Management System offers a premier solution for cataloging, indexing and retrieving NetShow video content across the Internet and intranets. This relationship, which is being announced at Microsoft's Web Tech Ed conference, enables Web developers to build multimedia-rich Web sites containing indexed, searchable NetShow-based content.

"NetShow 3.0 is a comprehensive product that delivers high quality audio and video across networks," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "It will advance the use of streaming video on corporate Web sites. As companies expand their use of NetShow for streaming video, it will become increasingly difficult for people to sort through all the content to find the specific segment they desire. That's where the Virage Media Management System will help -- by intelligently indexing and managing their NetShow content so that users can quickly and easily find what they are looking for." "The Virage Media Management System offers compelling new functionality for developers and users of NetShow," said Anthony Bay, general manager, Internet Services Business Unit, Microsoft Corporation. "Users with large amounts of video content will benefit greatly from the powerful indexing and search capabilities of the Virage Media Management System, one of the premiere content management packages on the market." Virage Media Management System The Virage Media Management System is actually comprised of two applications: the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser. At the front end, the Video Cataloger creates a powerful visual and textual index into video content at the same time that it encodes the NetShow-based file. It uses state-of-the-art technology to intelligently watch, listen to and read a video stream, automatically extracting information such as a thumbnail storyboard, an audio profile, closed captioned text and time codes that is then stored in a database management system.

At the backend, the Web-based Media Manager & Browser utilizes information extracted by the Video Cataloger as powerful search and retrieval tools to quickly find the specific content users want. For example, users can search an archive of corporate training videos for all references to a particular product. Once they have found specific segments of interest, they can play the NetShow video clips right to their desktop. In addition to providing distributed access to video, the Media Manager & Browser also handles the insertion, conversion and management of still images.

NetShow 3.0 NetShow 3.0 is a complete, easy and cost effective streaming media solution that enables Internet Content Providers and corporations to create, store and deliver high quality live and on-demand audio and video across networks. NetShow 3.0 supports a wide range of bandwidths from 3 Kbps mono-quality audio connections up to 8 Mbps broadcast-quality, full screen video on dedicated LANs and ATM networks. It also includes a universal player, providing users with a single interface for accessing multiple local and network-streamed data types, including NetShow native Advanced Streaming Format WAV, AVI, QuickTime, RealAudio and RealVideo content.

Pricing and Availability The Virage Media Management System is currently available directly from Virage. Pricing starts at $50,000 for an entry-level configuration. The Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser are also available in configurations to meet the requirements of a large enterprise. For more information, contact Virage at (650) 573-3210 or visit the company's Web site at www.virage.com. NetShow 3.0 can be currently downloaded from www.microsoft.com/netshow/download.htm.
