Virage adds RealNetworks video streaming capabilities to the Virage Media Management System

ATLANTA GA, October 8, 1997 -- Virage, Inc. today announced that it has signed an agreement with RealNetworks, the recognized leader in the streaming media market, to incorporate RealVideo streaming into the Virage Media Management System to deliver a powerful solution for cataloging, indexing and distributing large collections of video content. Today's announcement is made on the first day of the Networld+Interop 97 Atlanta Exhibition, where Virage is demonstrating its solution in RealNetworks' booth.

"With thousands of hours of RealAudio and RealVideo programming on the Internet, it has become necessary to develop a system to store, index and manage it," said Rob Glaser, Chief Executive Officer of RealNetworks. "Virage has delivered a fantastic solution for putting the right content into consumers' hands."

"If you want to deploy just a few clips of RealVideo on your Web site, finding your way through that content isn't a problem," said Paul Lego, Chief Executive Officer of Virage. "It's when you decide to deploy hundreds of hours of new content each month that things get interesting. Our solution automatically and intelligently indexes video so that users can find exactly what they want. And because the Virage Media Management System relies on powerful databases from Oracle or Informix, it's a solution that will scale as the volume of content continues to grow." Virage Media Management System The Virage Media Management System is actually two applications combined: the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser. At the front end, the Video Cataloger automates much of the labor intensive video logging process. It uses state-of-the-art technology to intelligently watch, listen to and read a video stream, automatically extracting information such as keyframes, an audio profile, closed captioned text and time codes that is then stored in a database management system. The result of the logging process is a rich storyboard index that communicates the story line in a highly efficient way.

At the backend, the Web-based Media Manager & Browser utilizes this information as powerful search and retrieval tools to quickly find the content users want. For example, users can look for a 10 second video clip from July 1995 of President Clinton talking about Medicare. Once they've found the specific video segment of interest, they can play the RealVideo right to their desktop.

The Media Manager & Browser also provides a variety of media management capabilities. Still images can be inserted and retrieved in a range of common formats. Users can check assets in and out of the system, create new versions, associate assets into groups and assign access privileges to users.

Pricing and Availability The Virage Media Management System is currently available on a limited basis to market leaders in the broadcast, advertising and consumer product and service industries. The product will be generally available in Q4, 1997. Pricing starts at $50,000 for an entry-level configuration.

Both the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser are also available in configurations to meet the requirements of a large enterprise. For more information, contact Virage at (650) 573-3210 or visit the company's Web site at www.virage.com.
