Breakthrough media management solution available on Oracle8
Virage and Oracle Announce First Availability of Compelling Media Cataloging and Management Solution REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Sept. 17, 1997--Oracle Corp. today announced the initial availability of the Virage Media Management System™, a compelling media management solution available from Virage, Inc. that leverages the scalability and multimedia capabilities of Oracle8TM. Virage is using data cartridge technology from Oracle which brings enterprise database capabilities to the management of digital media assets. Today's announcement is made in conjunction with Virage's launch of the breakthrough Virage Media Management System.
"Oracle provides our customers with a robust, scalable and reliable back-end database to store their media assets and the rich metadata that our system extracts," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer at Virage. "The combination of the Virage Media Management System and Oracle8 provides a powerful solution to the problem that many organizations face-the cataloging, managing, and distributing of media assets on a large scale.""Virage has leveraged the flexibility of Oracle's Network Computing ArchitectureTM (NCA) and the scalability and extensibility of Oracle8, our universal data server, to bring a compelling solution for corporations who are managing images, video and other multimedia data. We are currently working very closely with Virage in several corporate, broadcast and advertising accounts," said Jerry Held, senior vice president of Server Technologies, Oracle Corp.
Virage Media Management System The Virage Media Management System is actually two applications combined: the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser. At the front end, the Video Cataloger automates much of the labor intensive video logging process. It uses state-of-the-art technology to intelligently watch, listen to and read the video, automatically extracting information such as keyframes, audio profiles, closed captioned text, and time codes that is then stored in the Oracle8 universal data server. The result of the logging process is a rich story board index that communicates the story line in a highly efficient way.
At the backend, the Media Manager & Browser uses this information as powerful search and retrieval tools to quickly find the content users want. For example, users can look for a 10 second video clip from July 1995 of President Clinton talking about Medicare. Once they've found the specific video segment of interest, the footage can be streamed right to the users browser.
The Media Manager & Browser also provides a variety of media management capabilities. Still images can be inserted and retrieved in a range of common formats. Users can check assets in and out of the system, create new versions, or associate assets into groups. Access privileges can also be assigned to users, building upon the security features of Oracle8.
Pricing and Availability The Virage Media Management System is currently available on a limited basis to market leaders in the broadcast, advertising, and consumer products industries. The products will be generally available in Q4, 1997 from Virage, Inc. Pricing starts at US$50,000 for an entry-level configuration. Both the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser are also available in configurations to meet the requirements of a large enterprise.
