Virage introduces media management system-breakthrough video cataloging and media asset management solution

Industry Leaders Endorse Virage's Compelling Solutions for Broadcasters, Advertisers and Consumer Products Companies SAN MATEO, California (September 15, 1997) -- Virage, the leader in media management solutions, today announced the Virage Media Management System, a suite of revolutionary products for cataloging, sharing and distributing valuable media assets across an organization. The system is targeted at broadcast organizations, advertising agencies and consumer product companies--each of whom rely heavily on media content within their core businesses.

Virage Media Management System Benefits The Virage Media Management System consists of two powerful applications: the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser.

Together, these products deliver significant competitive advantages to media-rich companies by facilitating automated cataloging and fast, distributed access to core media assets.

The Video Cataloger eliminates the need for painstaking and inconsistent manual logging of video content. It uses state-of-the-art technology to watch, listen to and read a video stream, automatically slicing the video into logical segments based on changes in its content to create a keyframe storyboard that describes the content at a glance. The Video Cataloger also extracts closed caption text, time code information and a profile of the audio track.

The result is a wide variety of cross-indexed hooks into the video content that become powerful search and retrieval tools to quickly find a specific piece of footage.

The Media Manager & Browser brings an unprecedented facility and manageability to finding and retrieving media assets. Through a familiar Web interface, it provides distributed access to an organization's entire archive of video and still image content. Users can perform content driven searches using a combination of text, audio and visual cues--all of which were intelligently derived when the asset was logged.

For example, a user can look through 100 hours of video for a 10 second clip from July, 1995 of President Clinton talking about Medicare.

Results are presented as video storyboards and low-resolution image thumbnails, allowing users to understand the media content at a glance while at the same time easing network bandwidth requirements. For a more thorough preview, users can stream a low-bandwidth version of a specific video segment directly to their desktop.

The system also provides a variety of essential media management capabilities. Users can quickly and easily check assets in and out of the system, create new versions or associate assets into groups. Built on top of Oracle or Informix databases, the Virage Media Management System is designed to be highly reliable, scalable and secure, meeting all the essential requirements for mission-critical applications.

Responding to Market Needs The Virage Media Management System was developed in response to an urgent market need--to facilitate the cataloging, sharing and distributing of media assets on a large scale. Broadcasters, advertising agencies and consumer products and services companies have recognized the value in the Virage system's ability to centralize control and administration, yet provide distributed, Web-based access to these assets. The entire Virage system has been designed to minimize the time and effort required to establish a scalable asset repository that allows media content to be repurposed across a range of business processes.

Teaming with Industry Leaders Virage has announced strategic working relationships with industry leaders Informix, Oracle, Progressive Networks, Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems. Each of these partners has co-developed a connection between their platforms, applications or technology and Virage's cataloging and media management software.

Silicon Graphics Virage's partnership with Silicon Graphics and their StudioCentral foundation layer provides content creators and users across multiple industries with a complete solution to their media management needs.

"Our customers across several different industries have a similar problem: how to quickly and easily get their hands on the ever-increasing amount of data," said Ron Bernal, senior vice president, Scalable Networked Systems at Silicon Graphics. "By providing leading technology from our two companies, we can better provide our customers with a solution that allows users to find and manage the data they need." Sun Microsystems Virage's shared market focus with Sun Microsystems provides corporate, broadcast, and advertising customers with robust, enterprise-ready media management solutions.

"Virage's video cataloging and management solutions on Sun further enhance Sun's position as the digital media management platform of choice," said Mark Tolliver, vice president of market development at Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "Sun's network expertise and scalable open systems, combined with Virage's powerful video cataloging and management tools, are ideal for broadcasters and other corporations with critical video management needs." Oracle Corporation Virage and Oracle have delivered the power of the Network Computing Architecture (NCA) to the media management marketplace, allowing customers to leverage their existing expertise on the Oracle platform into the multimedia domain.

"Virage has leveraged the flexibility of Oracle's Network Computing Architecture (NCA) and the scalability and extensibility of Oracle8, our universal data server, to bring a compelling solution for corporations who are managing images, video and other multimedia data," said Jerry Held, senior vice president of server technologies at Oracle Corporation. "We are currently working very closely with Virage in several corporate, broadcast and advertising accounts." Informix Software Virage has extended it's partnership with Informix to provide customers with leading-edge technology integrated into a powerful, turnkey solution.

"The Virage Media Management System provides a compelling product to address the market need for efficiently managing media assets," said Jeff Hudson, Vice President of Business Development and Product Management at Informix. "Leveraging off of the power and robustness of the INFORMIX-Universal Server and DataBlade infrastructure, Virage was able to add their expertise in multimedia management applications to build a unique solution." Pricing and Availability The Virage Media Management System is currently available on a limited basis to select customers in the broadcast, advertising and consumer products industries. The products will be generally available in Calendar Q4/1997. Pricing starts at $50,000 for an entry-level configuration. Both the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser are also available in configurations to meet the requirements of a large enterprise.
