Informix-Universal Server powers comprehensive media asset management package from Virage

Demonstrates Opportunities Available to DataBlade Partners to Provide Unique Business Solutions AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands (September 15, 1997) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: IFMX), the leading provider of innovative database technology today announced at the International Broadcasting Convention the availability of INFORMIX®-Universal Server and DataBlade® modules with Virage's Media Management System. This announcement signals the continuation of a partnership that began last year to provide scalable, manageable solutions for media-rich businesses, including advertising, broadcasting, and publishing. Unlike traditional technology available to these industries today, this Informix-based system delivers unmatched ease-of-management, enterprise reliability, and fast, intuitive query and retrieval capabilities.

The Virage Media Management System is a comprehensive offering that meets the needs of companies in which the sharing and distributing of media are a vital part of every-day activities. The Virage Media Management System consists of two applications -- the Video Cataloger and the Media Manager & Browser -- that make full use of INFORMIX-Universal Server and DataBlade modules, including the Virage Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) DataBlade Module and the Informix Video Foundation DataBlade Module.

(Editor's note: please see related release describing Virage Media Management System: December 3rd, 1996.) "The market for media asset management continues to grow at a phenomenal rate," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer at Virage. "Informix's partnership with Virage extends INFORMIX-Universal Server using the Virage Media Management System into a more complete media management solution, providing customers with an intelligent way to catalog, arrange and distribute still images and video." "The VIR DataBlade Module combined with the functionality of Virage's Media Management System provides a compelling product to address the market need for efficiently managing media assets within a database environment," said Jeff Hudson, vice president of business development and product management at Informix.

"Leveraging INFORMIX-Universal Server and the market opportunities afforded with DataBlade modules, Virage was able to add their expertise in multimedia management applications to build a unique solution." Bringing Business Solutions to Market The Virage Media Management System delivers operational and competitive advantages to customers by cataloging, managing, and providing timely, distributed access to their media content. Using breakthrough technology, the Video Cataloger automatically and intelligently catalogs content by watching, listening to, and reading a video stream. By extracting keyframes, an audio profile, closed caption text, and time code information, the solution creates a rich index of the video which is easily stored in INFORMIX-Universal Server. Assets are managed and distributed by the Media Manager & Browser, a Web-based application that allows a broad range of users to browse and search video assets as well as still images stored by the application in a common media archive.

Because the Virage Media Management System is based on INFORMIX-Universal Server, with Informix's industry-leading Dynamic Scalable Architecture, users can expect the overall system to be highly reliable, scalable, and secure.

Early Success in Media Asset Management As the first Informix DataBlade partner, Virage has successfully demonstrated the unique opportunities offered by the Informix DataBlade program. In concert with Virage's Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) DataBlade Module, INFORMIX-Universal Server customers may search and retrieve graphics files based on the content of the stored images. The VIR DataBlade Module has proved to be an integral part of several companies' database-driven content management systems.

In addition to Virage Inc., Informix partners with several additional media asset management companies including: Avid Technology; Bulldog Group; The Content Group; Excalibur Technologies Corp.; Muscle Fish, LLC; Silicon Graphics, Inc.; Signafy, Inc.; TECHMATH GmbH; and TATA Consultancy Services.

About INFORMIX-Universal Server INFORMIX-Universal Server is the industry's first open, completely integrated object-relational database server. INFORMIX-Universal Server provides extensibility through DataBlade modules to handle the broad range of datatypes--such as images, spatial and text--not managed effectively by traditional relational databases.
