Sun and Virage to provide breakthrough media asset management solutions Virage's Media Management System on Sun platforms unlocks the value of video assets for broadcasters and corporations PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sept. 15, 1997 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced its engineering, marketing and sales support for the Virage Video Cataloger and Media Manager & Browser. Virage and Sun will work together to optimize these powerful video and still image management solutions on the Sun(TM) platform. The combined offering will provide broadcasting and corporate customers with an efficient, network-based means of managing and distributing their media assets.
The Virage Video Cataloger will deliver operational and competitive advantages to customers by managing and providing timely, distributed access to their media content in the highly scalable Solaris(TM) operating environment. Using breakthrough technology, the Video Cataloger automatically and intelligently catalogs content by watching, listening to and reading a video stream. By extracting keyframes audio, Closed-Caption text visual and SMTPE time code information, the solution creates a rich index which is easily stored, managed and distributed. The Java(TM)-enabled Media Manager & Browser is Web-based to allow a broad range of users to browse and search the media archive.

Combined with Sun Microsystems, Virage is developing a breakthrough solution to effectively catalog and manage media content for both traditional and new media offerings." Video Cataloger users will be able to take advantage of the growing digital delivery options like the Internet and private Intranets in which Sun has established itself as a leader. The Video Cataloger on the Sun platform will particularly serve the needs of customers with enterprise level media management needs. Virage plans to deploy its solutions on the Sun platform with its existing customers in industries where digital media management is critical to success.
