Oracle, Digital, and Virage launch free-access endangered species Web site to demonstrate latest information- and media-management technologies
Oracle, Digital, and Virage launch free-access endangered species Web site to demonstrate latest information- and media-management technologies Dynamic, educational Web site available to grade schoolers and educators NEW YORK -- June 24, 1997 -- Oracle Corporation, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Virage Inc. today introduced a unique, free-access educational World Wide Web site with high quality images and searchable information about endangered species from around the world. The Web site (http://www.endangeredzone.com) was unveiled for the first time today at Oracle's spectacular global launch for Oracle8 and network computing at Radio City Music Hall.
The result of the collaboration is a high-performance, graphical, interactive environment containing records of endangered wildlife from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other sources. In addition to images of endangered wildlife, the site provides descriptions of characteristics and habitats of species such as the grizzly bear, Florida panther, Siberian tiger, California condor, bald eagle, and Aleutian Canada goose.
With the advanced technology, students can easily view images and eventually video, hear audio footage, and pinpoint the endangered species in their geographic regions through sophisticated spatial data management. Since the Web site uses the database to create dynamic Web pages, students can also personalize their Web site based on preferences such as locations and favorite species, as well as build a personalized field journal of information for research reports, study guides or extracurricular projects. They are also able to enter their email address for future chat sessions.
"We wanted to demonstrate Oracle8 server's new technology in a dramatic but educational way," explains Mark Jarvis, vice president of Marketing, Server Technologies, Oracle Corp. "Endangeredzone.com is excellent for showing the use of very advanced information management capabilities while providing a wonderful opportunity to learn more about some of our most threatened wildlife." The site exploits the new capabilities of the Oracle8(tm) Universal Data Server, Oracle® Web Application Server 3.0 and Oracle data cartridges for text and spatial data. Endangeredzone.com was developed in cooperation with Virage, who utilized Oracle8's capability to handle multiple data types by calling upon image, Web, spatial, and text data cartridges, and is hosted on a Digital AlphaServer 4100 5/300 midrange system.
"We have a long and established relationship with Oracle and we were honored that they approached us to develop this site with them as part of the Oracle8 launch," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage. "Endangeredzone.com is a perfect example of Virage technology at work. Our technology, along with Oracle8, provides the foundation upon which the site is built and allows for all types of media data to be easily managed. This translates into a more intuitive and efficient method for searching and retrieving information on the endangered wildlife listed on the Web site." "This effort was a perfect opportunity for Digital to support its partners in an important demonstration of leading technology and a worthwhile cause," explained Jim O'Gara, Digital's vice president of the Database Marketing Development Group. "Because of their outstanding price and performance, Digital AlphaServer systems are the platform of choice for deploying many of the industry's most demanding Internet applications." Endangeredzone.com is built around Oracle's Network Computing Architecture, fully utilizing all three tiers of the model to provide sophisticated multimedia support for thin clients. The site utilizes Oracle8 features such as easy storage and retrieval of multimedia data through data cartridges. The Oracle8 Spatial Cartridge allows users to make spatial inquiries of Endangeredzone.com, clicking on a particular location on a map and viewing information on endangered species living in that region. Spatial Cartridge uses coordinate information stored in the database to return the appropriate species by location.
New entries and features are planned to take the site from its current stage to an even fuller-functioning, educational resource. Oracle, Virage, and Digital have donated hardware, software, and support services for Endangeredzone.com and plan to transfer its management to a group or foundation dedicated to wildlife education and protection.
