Virage and Viisage add facial recognition capabilities to Oracle8
Capability demonstrated at Oracle8 New York City rollout LITTLETON, MASS. -- June 24, 1997 -- Viisage Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: VISG), a systems integrator and leading provider of biometric identification systems and solutions, announced a data cartridge that integrates Viisage's patented facial recognition software into Oracle8, the newest release of the world's most popular database system.
The Viisage cartridge will benefit users by giving them the ability to search for, compare, and verify facial images stored, managed, and accessed by Oracle8. Developers can now create Oracle8 applications that use facial recognition capabilities for many identification and verification purposes. Facial recognition extends the Oracle8 Visual Information Retrieval Data Cartridge, which provides query by image content capabilities. The Oracle8 Visual Information Retrieval Data Cartridge is produced by Virage Inc., a leader in image and video management solutions. Viisage and Virage collaborated to incorporate Viisage's facial recognition capabilities into the data cartridge.
Bob Hughes, president and chief executive officer of Viisage Technology, said, "Businesses and government organizations need to be able to compare millions of digital images in large databases for identification, verification, access control and for PC and network security. Bringing the performance, reliability, and scalability of Oracle8 to these critical applications is a huge plus for these organizations. By using data cartridge technology, our application programmers were able to easily extend the Oracle8 Visual Information Retrieval Data Cartridge to support facial recognition, making the ability to identify and verify faces a natural part of the database.""With Oracle8, Oracle's partners can build a database that supports every data type and data model found in an enterprise -- from objects, relational and spatial, to text, images, video, and audio," said Jim Steiner, senior marketing director, Oracle server technologies. This satisfies the increasing demand for universal data systems, giving Oracle partners the first proven and tested software to support their multimedia data." "Oracle8 makes it possible to manage not only more volumes of data but also different types of data," said Tom Stuart, vice president of marketing at Virage Inc. "Facial recognition is one of the most requested capabilities by customers who are using image applications with Oracle. We are excited to be working with Viisage to provide this support in Oracle8. The Viisage facial recognition technology is a great example of the type of market-specific application that our visual information retrieval technology enables. We look forward to offering more market-specific solutions in the future." Viisage and Oracle are demonstrating facial recognition with Oracle8 on June 24th as part of Oracle's Oracle8 and Network Computing announcement at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
