Sybase and Virage team to deliver image management solution for multitier business computing

Virage's visual information retrieval component extends Sybase's next generation Adaptive Server Architecture to image domain SAN MATEO, CA -- April 7, 1997 -- Virage, Inc. today announced that Virage and Sybase, Inc. have signed an agreement whereby Sybase has licensed Virage's pioneering Visual Information Retrieval (VIR) technology for use in Sybase's next generation Adaptive Server™ database management system. The incorporation of VIR into the Adaptive Server is expected to improve the retrieval of images from large collections of data by using the visual characteristics of images to perform more effective and intuitive searches. The Sybase® Adaptive Server is the cornerstone of Sybase's new architecture, ImpactNow™ Adaptive Component Architecture™, in which optimized component data stores enable high performance, multi-tier business applications.

Sybase plans to offer Virage's VIR Image Engine as a component of the Sybase Adaptive Server database for image management. The combination of the VIR with the high performance, scalable Sybase Adaptive Server is expected to provide customers with the solutions they need to manage a broad variety of content across distributed information systems and the Internet. The Adaptive Server is optimized to store different data types, making it a powerful platform for Virage's image search and retrieval technology.

"Sybase's Adaptive Server is optimized for specialized component data stores like Virage's VIR Image Engine," said Mike Regan, Vice President and General Manager of Sybase Database Servers. "With the VIR component, users can now easily access large volumes of images that were previously impossible or difficult to retrieve. Together, we're providing customers with a powerful solution for multimedia asset management." Virage's VIR technology taps the rich visual content of images, rather than keyword annotations, to perform searches through collections of visual assets to find images that are visually similar. To allow for the different needs of each search, the weighting of search criteria such as color, structure, texture or composition can be adjusted to interactively refine the results. A VIR search can also be combined with a keyword search to yield even more focused results.

"As organizations amass more and more multimedia images, there is a growing demand for a more efficient way to manage and reuse these valuable assets," said Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage, Inc. "Virage is able to leverage the high performance of Sybase's Adaptive Server to provide companies with a fast and efficient way to turn image data into useful corporate assets." Virage licenses VIR technology as an easy-to-integrate product called the VIR Image Engine. The VIR Image Engine performs the core duties of the search including analyzing images, extracting visual features and comparing them to quantify similarity.
