EMC, Informix, and Virage demonstrate digital media asset mangement solution

Companies show results of joint development of intelligent system for multimedia storage, cataloging, indexing, query, browsing, and delivery LAS VEGAS -- April 7, 1997 -- EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of intelligent enterprise storage systems, in conjunction with Informix, the leading provider of innovative database technology, and image search and retrieval pioneer Virage, Inc. are demonstrating a digital multimedia asset management system at the National Association of Broadcasters convention here in Las Vegas.

The digital media asset management solution, featured in both the EMC and Informix exhibits, shows a solution for managing video assets built on EMC's Symmetrix Network Media Storage (SNMS) integrated with INFORMIX-Universal Server and video cataloging and browsing technology from Virage.

The integration of SNMS, INFORMIX®-Universal Server, and Virage's video cataloging and browsing technology allows users to catalog, index, annotate, store and stream video assets with an intelligent, cost-effective, robust system. Users can deposit, browse, retrieve and deliver multimedia content over standard local and wide area networks for broadcasting, production, intranet/internet applications, telemedicine and distance learning.

INFORMIX-Universal Server and DataBlader technology enables users to create multi-terabyte databases that manage mixed types of data, including text, images, sound, maps and associated metadata. To provide high-performance delivery of multimedia, EMC's SNMS system combines EMC's industry-leading Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system with a unique real-time operating system. Informix's Video Foundation DataBlade module offers a complete solution for video storage and delivery.

Virage's video cataloging and browsing technology provides automated video logging, asset annotation, and distributed browsing using the Web. The cataloging technology features rich, automatic metadata extraction, including Closed Captioned text, audio, timecode, and key frames. The demonstration also shows an easy to use, Web-based interface where users can search the collection by text and category, as well as image, motion, and audio, before streaming the video to a high resolution monitor.

"The combination of INFORMIX-Universal Server, Virage's video cataloging and browsing technology, and SNMS provides a complete solution for storing and managing video and multimedia applications," said Israel Gat, Director of EMC's Network Storage Group. "EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems provide the high availability, capacity, and performance necessary to scale video databases into the multiple terabyte range." "By partnering with leading companies like EMC and Virage, and taking advantage of the unique Informix DataBlade technology, we are giving our customers the ability to store, manage and deliver digital video applications in the most efficient and reliable way possible," said Jeff Hudson, vice president of business development and product development at Informix. "This announcement highlights the versatility of INFORMIX-Universal Server, Virage's software for video cataloging and management, and EMC's Symmetrix, and their ability to be customized to address new markets." Paul Lego, chief executive officer of Virage, said "Taking full advantage of digital assets presents both an interesting challenge and a compelling market opportunity. Each of these three companies are tackling this challenge and providing real solutions to media-intensive markets. INFORMIX-Universal Server and EMC's SNMS provide a robust platform for delivering multimedia applications. Combined with Virage's video cataloging and browsing technology, including our Visual Information Retrieval software, they provide a powerful, scalable solution that lets users find the right media asset at the right time from databases containing tens of thousands of still images and video assets."
